Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bailey Scores 20 as Chargers Fall to Le Moyne in Overtime

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) dropped 20 points in his home court debut as the New Haven men's basketball team (1-1, 0-1 NE10) dropped a 75-73 overtime decision to the visiting Le Moyne Dolphins (2-3, 1-0 NE10) on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.

Bailey was one of three Chargers in double figures joined by sophomore Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) and redshirt-junior Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who finished with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Bailey's 20 points was the most by a Charger through the first two games and is the 25th time in his career he has hit the 20 point plateau.

Among the three leading scorers for the Blue and Gold, the point guard, Lane finished the game perfect from the field on five attempts, including two of those from outside the arc, while he was also 2-of-2 at the free throw line. Lane added to that five rebounds and four assists. Bailey finished the game shooting 8-of-22 with a trio of three point field goals while adding eight rebounds.

Following Rowland's 10 points was senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) and redshirt sophomore Ross Jones II (Edgewood, Md./Friends School) who each chipped in nine points, while Felizor added to that 10 rebounds to finish just shy of the first double double of the season for New Haven. Felizor also added four assists and a career-high four blocked shots, while Rowland rounded out the leaders in the assists category with three.

As a team, the Chargers shot 40.6 percent for the game (26-of-64), with their best shooting coming in the overtime period where they missed just two of their seven attempts. Three of the five made field goals in that five minute stretch coming from beyond the arc. Overall, half of New Haven's 26 total buckets came from beyond the three point stripe with Bailey and Jones leading the way with three apiece.

Neither team could catch fire early in the game as the team's battled to an 11-11 stalemate nearly halfway through the opening period. The Chargers first lead of the game came on the first long range bucket of the night which came from Lane, erasing an early 4-0 lead for the Dolphins. Following that 11-11 draw, the Chargers would go on to open up a four point lead, which matched the high for either team in the first half, on  back-to-back three pointers from Jones which came less than a minute apart.

Inside of the final five minutes in the opening frame, the Dolphins used a 6-1 rally to gain a 26-23 lead with 2:03 remaining before intermission. The Chargers would answer by scoring nine of the final 11 points to take a 32-28 lead into the break courtesy of a Felizor layup on a put back as time expired.

After Le Moyne scored the opening bucket in the second quarter, the Chargers answered with five straight points to open up the largest lead thus far at 37-30. New Haven would then answer the momentum breaking bucket from Le Moyne by scoring the next nine points to open up the first double digit advantage of the night at 46-32 with 15:03 to play.

The Chargers would extend their lead to as much as 15 thanks to a three pointer from Bailey with 11:51 remaining before Le Moyne began to get hot. The Dolphins would go from that point to score 20 of the next 23 points to gain a 56-54 lead with 4:04 remaining. After new Haven tied the score at 56 with a Rowland layup, the Dolphins answered with a two pointer in the pair with 99 seconds remaining. New haven would answer 22 seconds later with a jumper from Felizor and neither team would score in the final minute forcing the extra period.

After an early free throw from the Dolphins in overtime, New Haven would score the next eight points to take a seven point lead with 2:43 remaining. The final six points in that stretch came from Bailey who pulled up from beyond the arc on back-to-back possessions. The Chargers would match that lead with 1:02 remaining in overtime before the Dolphins rallied courtesy of back-to-back three pointers from Tim Leavell that came 12 seconds apart.

The Chargers looked to break a 73-73 stalemate at the free throw line but missed both of the attempts which left Le Moyne with six seconds on the clock. The Dolphins managed a score with eight tenths of a second remaining on a layup at the rim by Oshea Gairey.

New Haven will return to action with the first of three games in the next week when they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. for a date with the Pace Setters. Opening tip off at Goldstein Fitness Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
