Pace Uses Big Second Half to Sink Chargers, 77-61

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – A strong second half from Pace was too much to handle as the New Haven men's basketball team fell 77-61 on the road on Tuesday night. Redshirt junior Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) and sophomore Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) tied for the team lead with 13 points apiece, while shooting a combined 10-for-17 from the floor. Senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) also scored in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds. Rowland led the Chargers with four assists.

With the Chargers (1-2, 0-2 NE10) leading by three at halftime, Pace (6-0, 2-0 NE10) exploded for 47 points in the second half, shooting nearly 63 percent over the final 20 minutes and connected on six three-pointers, finishing the game at 55.8 percent from the floor. New Haven finished the game shooting and even 37 percent (20-for-54) and outrebounded Pace 35-29. Peyton Wejnert led all scorers with 30 points for the Setters.

FIRST HALF
  • Trailing 5-4 early, New Haven surged on a 7-0 run to take an 11-5 lead, highlighted by a layup and free throw from Felizor, and a big one-handed slam on a drive from Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School).
  • Pace cut the Charger lead to 13-11 before New Haven used consecutive triples to go up 19-11. Bailey found Rowland for the first triple from the top of the key, and Felizor banked one in from the left wing off a Rowland assist at 10:43.
  • A 6-0 run for Pace got the Setters back within two before Felizor hit a free throw, then Rowland beat the shot clock with a three to make to 23-17 with 7:17 left until halftime.
  • Pace used a 9-2 run late in the half (5-of-6 shooting) to tie the game at 30.
  • Ross Jones II (Edgewood, Md./Friends School) gave New Haven a 33-30 edge going into the locker room by taking a pass from Rowland in the right corner and burying the Chargers fifth triple of the opening half with exactly one minute remaining.
SECOND HALF
  • Rowland hit a three early in the second to make it 38-32, only to see the Setters tie it up at 38 following a 6-0 run.
  • After Pace extended the run to 10-2 and took the lead, Jones drained a three off the Felizor dish to put New Haven up 43-42 at 15:45.
  • From there, Pace went on a 13-3 run, which was part of an extended 23-7 burst that put the Setters up by double digits for the first time, 55-45 with 11:17 remaining in regulation.
  • Bailey ended the run with a pair of free throws to climb New Haven back within seven at 10:55, but Pace promptly scored seven unanswered points with a pair of layups, including one off a turnover, then a three-pointer to balloon the lead to 15 points, 62-47.
  • The lead grew to as much as 17 before Lane added a layup at 7:03.
  • Wejnert added a jumper for Pace at the 5:17 mark to go up by 19, and grew the lead to a game-high 20 on two occasions over the final 3:21.
  • Kendall McMillan (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) each connected on three-pointers on the Chargers' final two possessions to bring the final to 77-61.
