QUOTES FROM THE COACH: DEBBIE BUFF
"It's always great to get the first win. We had seven new kids learning the system and they all got good minutes. Now we need to build on what we did the second half."
"I thought we didn't play the way we've been practicing in the first half. We weren't controlling the game and we got ourselves into foul trouble. We weren't making adjustments based on how the game was being called and we kept putting them on the foul line."
"In the second half, we came out and played much more disciplined. We settled down and the lineup we started in the third quarter gave us some really good minutes. Aurora played well both offensively and defensively, and (Chambers, Ocasio, Pergola and Wormack) all gave us some great minutes in the third."
FIRST QUARTER
- The lead changed hands nine times over the first 10 minutes, with the Chargers shooting exactly 50 percent in the frame.
- Following an offensive rebound by Deshaies, Pergola knocked down a three-pointer to give the Chargers a 20-18 lead in the final seconds of the period.
SECOND QUARTER
- Staten Island took advantage of some New Haven struggles in the second quarter, outscoring the Chargers 17-12 to take a 35-32 lead going into halftime.
- With several players on the bench in foul trouble, Deshaies provided a big lift for the Blue and Gold, scoring eight points on 3-of-4 shooting in the frame.
THIRD QUARTER
- New Haven started the second half with an 11-2 run, taking the lead for good (38-37) on a jumper by Pergola in the paint at the 5:50 mark.
- Pergola followed with a steal-and-score, and Wormack added a fastbreak bucket of her own off a Pergola assist to take a 42-37 lead.
- After the Dolphins got back within five, New Haven rattled off an extended 12-0 run to build a 55-40 lead in the final minute of the period.
- Making her Chargers' debut, junior transfer Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) scored four points in the third, both coming in transition following steals.
