Wormack and DeBose Power Chargers to 65-50 Win at American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) dropped a season-high 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting, and sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) scored 17 points and had a trio of three-pointers to lead New Haven to a 65-50 road Northeast-10 win at American International on Tuesday. The Chargers shot a season-best 52.0 percent from the floor and held the Yellow Jackets to 24 points in the second half, putting the game away with a big 14-3 run in the fourth quarter.

Freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) also reached double figures for New Haven (7-1, 4-1 NE10) with 10 points. Junior Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and DeBose tied for a game-high with eight rebounds apiece. The Chargers held a big 40-23 edge on the boards and outscored AIC (3-6, 1-4 NE10) 16-5 on second-chance baskets and 40-18 in the paint.

"We spoke before the game about being road warriors. We played with energy and had a great second half. Micah (Wormack) and Cam (DeBose) were huge on both sides of the ball and I was was pleased with our rebounding and our play in the paint. It's great to go to 7-1."

FIRST QUARTER
  • Despite hitting six of their first seven shots, and finishing the first quarter 6-for-8, the Chargers led by just one, 16-15 after one quarter.
  • New Haven went up 6-0 when Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) grabbed a steal, then Pergola found Wormack for a breakaway layup. Deshaies then took a steal and brought it for a layup to give New Haven a 10-2 lead at the 6:17 mark, forcing an AIC timeout.
  • Deshaies broke a 5-0 Yellow Jacket run with a layup from Pergola at 3:23 to make it 15-10
  • AIC used a trio of three-pointers in the quarter to rally and cut it to 15-13 with 1:30 left, then tying the game off a turnover coming out of a timeout.
SECOND QUARTER
  • After AIC cut it to 22-20 at 6:22 of the second, New Haven rattled off five unanswered to take a 27-20 lead, capped when Ocasio grabbed a steal, then found DeBose for a right-wing three at the other end.
  • After AIC's fifth three-pointer of the opening half made it 28-26, Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) fed Wormack in the lane for a turnaround jumper just ahead of the horn to give New Haven a 30-26 lead going into the half.
New Haven closed out the first half shooting 12-for-18 overall and 3-of-4 from the arc. AIC keep the game close with five three-pointers on 12 attempts.

THIRD QUARTER
  • After falling behind 36-34, New Haven scored 11-straight, going up on a three-pointer by DeBose. Wormack added a jumper off the second chance rebound by DeBose, then Wormack hit a pair of free throws and a jumper to make it 45-36 at 3:04, forcing a Yellow Jacket timeout.
  • New Haven led 45-38 after three quarters. AIC broke the 11-0 spell with a basket with 1:59 remaining, and held the Chargers scoreless over the final 3:07.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • A DeBose jumper at 7:02 grew the New Haven lead to nine for the first time, 52-41. Deshaies got the lead back to nine on the next possession with a turnaround jumper in the lane, and Pergola brought the lead to double digits with two free throws at 5:17.
  • Wormack banked in another jumper with 2:44 left to build the lead to 61-44, bringing the New Haven run to 14-3, including a stretch of 10-unanswered.
  • DeBose grabbed another offensive board and fed Wormack to get the lead back to 17 points at 1:59. Aliyah Wright (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) hit two free throws in the closing moments to bring the lead to a game-high 19 points before AIC scored the final four points for the 65-50 final.
New Haven will have a quick turnaround, heading back on the road to Philadelphia on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup at Chestnut Hill.
