WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A mid-second half 18-0 rally for the New Haven men's basketball team put the Chargers ahead for good as they scored their third-straight victory 78-64 over the visiting Holy Family Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.
Leading the Blue and Gold was senior guard
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) who rattled off 20+ points for the fifth straight game, closing out the pre-holiday schedule with a team-best 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting. He also compiled his first career double double hauling in a career-high 10 rebounds.
Senior forward
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) finished just behind Bailey in leading the Chargers as he also combined for a double double, putting up 21 points and pulling down 10 boards. His 21 points tied his season-high while it is the second time he has scored 20+ this season. Additionally, his 11 rebounds also tied a season-high, while it is his third double double over the last four games. Felizor also matched a career-high picking off four steals, part of 11 total for the team.
Rounding out the leaders on the day was freshman forward
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) who picked up a pair of career-highs on the day. Thomas finished the afternoon battle shooting 6-of-10 from the field with four of those buckets from beyond the arc while adding a pair of free throws for a career-high 18 points. He also dished out a career-high six assists, while adding to that five rebounds.
Redshirt junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) put together a well-rounded performance as he finished with eight points and three steals while also dishing out a career-high 10 assists, the most for any Charger this season. Sophomore
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) also returned to the lineup for the Chargers after suffering an ankle injury in late November. The point guard finished with four points, on a perfect 4-of-4 at the free throw line, while dishing out three assists, all of which came in 15+ minutes in the second half.
As a team, New Haven finished the day shooting 49.2 percent from the field, connecting on 29-of-59 field goal attempts. Among those 29 buckets were 11 from beyond the three point arc, the fourth time this season the Chargers finished with double figure three pointers. Additionally, the Blue and Gold closed out the afternoon shooting 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
The Chargers will enjoy an end-of-semester hiatus which will include the holiday break, not returning to the hardwood until New Year's Eve when they will travel to Philadelphia for a date with the Jefferson Rams. Opening tip in the final game of the calendar year is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. from the Gallagher Center.
