Felizor Double Double Paces Men's' Basketball in New Year's Eve Loss at Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The fourth double double of the season from senior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) led the New Haven men's basketball team (4-6) as the Chargers dropped a 61-55 decision to the Jefferson Rams in a New Year's Eve matinee. Felizor closed out the 2019 finale with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double double and his fifth straight game scoring in double figures.

In addition to shooting 6-of-10 from the field, Felizor added 4-of-5 from the free throw line while also dishing out three assists. Felizor's numbers in all three major statistical categories led the Blue and Gold, the second player this season to do so following Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) who did so against Saint Leo.

Overall, Felizor was one of three players to score in double figures with freshman Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) and Bailey following with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The 11 points for Thomas is his second straight game in double digits for an average of 14.5 points-per-game over the last two outings.

Rounding out the leading scorers was redshirt junior Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who finished with nine points while he and Thomas followed Felizor in leading the Chargers rebounding efforts, each pulling down five boards apiece. Overall for the afternoon, all but two of the Chargers 55 points came from their starting five with the lone bench points on the day from Darius Roundtree (Plainfield, N.J./The Patrick School) who finished with a pair.

For the game, New Haven shot 44.9 percent as a team, connecting on 22-of-49 field goal attempts with just five of those coming from beyond the three point arc. The Chargers also added six points at the free throw line, missing just a single of their seven attempts. As a team, the Blue and Gold also combined for 12 second chance points which came on five offensive boards.

New Haven will return to the hardwood in the new decade when they also return to Northeast-10 Conference play against Adelphi on Saturday, January 4. The Chargers and Panthers are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. tip off, following the women's game, at the Center for Recreation and Sport in Garden City, N.Y.
