MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) smashed three home runs as part of a 23-hit assault for the New Haven baseball team, who wrapped up their Myrtle Beach trip with a powerful 14-7 victory over Concordia on Sunday afternoon. The Chargers hit seven home runs as a team, including two from senior Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) and one each from junior Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and senior Dylon Grzenda (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro). The seven home runs hit by the Chargers is the most by the team since the keeping of single-game records began at the start of the 2007 season, and their 23 hits are the most in a single game since 2013. Boag's three home runs are also the most by a single player since 2019 Chargers' Hall of Fame inductee Michael Moras also hit three in a game against Assumption in 2007.
Eight Chargers recorded multiple hits on the day, with Boag leading the way going 5-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Garcia also drove in five runs while going 4-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. Senior James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) added three hits and two runs, while five others added two hits each. Freshman Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) picked up the win in his first collegiate start on the mound, allowing four earned runs over 5.1 innings while walking just one and striking out four. Junior Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) struck out three while retiring all four batters he faced in relief to earn the save.
Twelve of New Haven's 23 hits in the game went for extra bases. The Chargers (3-1) have now scored 37 runs over its current three-game winning streak.
Concordia struck for a quick run in the bottom of the first, but the Chargers came right back when Boag poked a two-out offering to the opposite field for a solo home run to tie the game 1-1.
The Chargers then put up a four-spot to take the lead in the top of the third, all after two outs. With nobody on base, Chamberlain got hit by a pitch, then Garcia stepped up and hit his first of two home runs of the afternoon to put the Chargers up 3-1. Up next, PJ Contreras (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) doubled, and Boag followed with his second homer of the game to extend the Chargers' lead to 5-1.
The Clippers cut into the lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, but the Chargers got the runs back with a three-run fourth inning. Myers led off with an infield single, then stole second. Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) then drove him in with a double to make it 6-3. Two batters later, Garcia knocked his second round tripper of the day over the fence, increasing the New Haven edge to 8-3.
Chamberlain kept the five-run lead intact, throwing out a runner at the plate from center field to end the fourth inning.
Chamberlain added a one-out homer to make it 9-3 in the sixth, his fourth home run in as many games to start the season. The Clippers got a pair of runs back in the home half of the sixth, but Boag led off the top of the seventh with his third home run of the game to up the New Haven lead to 10-5.
Concordia continued to chip away with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to get within three runs headed to the ninth. Grzenda gave New Haven some breathing room with his second-career home run to lead off the ninth. Myers followed up with a triple, and scored one batter later on a RBI single by Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell), making it 12-7. Budzik came home three batters later on a two-out double by Garcia. Boag then kept his hot streak going with his fifth hit in as many at bats, smacking a RBI single to score Garcia to double-up the Clippers 14-7.
The Chargers will return to action this coming Thursday, Feb 28 with a trip to LIU Post. First pitch from Long Island is scheduled for 3 p.m.
