Big Second Half Run Sends Adelphi Past Chargers 83-78

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – A big second half helped the Adelphi Panthers down the University of New Haven men's basketball team by a score of 83-78 on Saturday afternoon. All five Charger starters scored in double figures led by freshman Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J. /Trenton Catholic Academy) scored a career-high 19 points and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 3-for-3 from three-point range, while adding four assists. Junior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) had a team-high 21 points. Junior Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) added 15 points, Roy Kane, Jr. (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) totaled 11 points and redshirt sophomore Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) scored 10 points.

With the Chargers (15-7, 10-6 NE10) leading by 11 with 13:44 left, Adelphi (16-8, 10-6 NE10) exploded on a 17-2 run, connecting on 11 of 12 field goals, including eight three-pointers to take a nine point lead and hold off a late Charger rally for the win.

For the game, New Haven finished 30-for-56 (53.6 percent) from the field and 12-for-28 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Panthers finished the game shooting 60.9 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three-point range, thanks in large part to a hot second half where they connected on over 76 percent of their field goals and went 9-for-12 from downtown.

FIRST HALF

·       Both teams alternated three baskets apiece through the first four-plus minutes to knot the game 6-6. The Chargers followed with an 8-0 run, starting on a triple by Bailey and two free throws from Najee Larcher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian).

·       Bailey swished home a one-handed floater along the baseline, drew the foul and hit the ensuing free throw to up the Chargers' edge to 14-6.

·       Adelphi followed with a 9-2 run to get within 16-15. Bailey broke the spell with a short baseline jumper to go up 18-15 at 10:43.

·       The Panthers kept their foot on the gas, upping their run to 18-6 to build a 24-20 lead just past the nine-minute mark.

·       Bailey got the Chargers within two with a layup, and Felizor added a layup at 7:41 to make it 24-23 Adelphi.

·       Lane put New Haven back up 26-24 with a three from straight down the middle, but the Panthers quickly countered with a triple of their own to retake the 27-26 lead.

·       Kane gave the Chargers the lead back, 31-30, at the 3:28 mark with a jumper after a Panthers offensive foul.

·       Felizor picked the pocket of Panther guard and took it to the hoop for a layup to give the Chargers a 33-30 edge. Rowland followed with a left wing three-pointer to grow the lead back to six, 36-30, forcing an Adelphi timeout with 1:39 remaining until halftime.

·       Adelphi hit a pair from the line in the final minute as the Chargers carried a 36-32 lead into the locker room.

SECOND HALF

·       Lane and Felizor scored the first five points if the half for New Haven to build a 41-37 lead. Felizor added a long trey to answer an Adelphi three to bring it to 43-40 at 17:47.

·       Lane and Felizor sandwiched an Adelphi three with triples of their own, and Lane followed with a driving layup to increase the Chargers' lead to 51-43, forcing an Adelphi timeout at 14:43.

·       Felizor swished home a three from the left side to bring the lead to double digits for the first time at 54-43, upping the Chargers run to 13-3.

·       Adelphi quickly sprinted out on a 7-0 run to pull within 54-51 with 12:12 to play, but Bailey put an end to the run with his first three of the afternoon to get the lead back to six, 57-51.

·       After the Chargers went up 61-53, Adelphi turned the game around with a big 17-2 run, including 11 in a row at one point. The Panthers closed within 61-59 at 8:59 following a hoop, foul and free throw.

·       After a Kane layup, Adelphi struck for three consecutive three-pointers to take a 68-63 lead, then added a layup two possessions later to go up by seven.

·       After another Panthers three put them up 73-64, Bailey turned in a big three-point play, hitting the layup while drawing a foul and draining the free throw to get New Haven back within 73-67 with 2:57 to go.

·       New Haven did not go quietly though, as Felizor connected with a left wing three-pointer off the Bailey assist to get within 75-70 with 1:34 to play.

·       After the Chargers forced a shot clock violation, Kane, Jr. pulled New Haven to within two on a three-pointer form down the middle with 54 seconds left.

·       The Panthers built the lead back to 77-73 with a running layup with 30.3 seconds left. New Haven then had a chance to get the deficit back to two, but missed two free throw attempts. Adelphi made the misses hurt, connecting on their two ensuing attempts to take a 79-73 lead.

·       Bailey got New Haven back within three with a three-pointer off the Lane assist with 12.1 seconds left.

·       The Panthers hit two free throws with 11.2 seconds remaining, then Lane made it a one possession game once again with a baseline layup.

·       After Felizor's fifth foul sent the Panthers to the line, Adelphi closed it out with two more free throws for the 83-78 victory.

New Haven will cap its two-game road trip on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 p.m. showdown at NE10 Southwest Division foe Pace.
