CARY, N.C. – The New Haven baseball team closed out its four-game weekend trip to North Carolina on Sunday afternoon with a 6-2 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas. Sophomore Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) went 2-for-4 at the plate, with six other Chargers all picking up one hit apiece. Junior Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) and sophomore Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) each had RBI singles for the Chargers, who now sit at 5-3 on the season. Brendon Malouf (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) pitched for the second day in a row, tossing 1.2 hitless innings of relief.
After each team picked up one hit through the first two innings, New Haven broke the deadlock with a run in the top of the third. George Pappas (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) led off the frame with a single, and was sac bunted to second by James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East). Two batters later, Huber knocked a RBI single to give the Chargers the 1-0 lead.
STAC got two hits to help loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third against starter Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley), and scored an unearned run on a passed ball to tie the score at one.
After a scoreless fourth inning, STAC put up a three-spot in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. A pair of doubles put the Spartans up 2-1, and Eletto was lifted after issuing a one-out walk. Reliever Kevin McNiff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) induced an infield popup for the second out, but STAC's Tyler Pattane followed with a bloop single to give the Spartans a three-run lead.
Cain led off the seventh with a double, breaking up a stretch of eight Chargers retired in a row, but was eventually stranded at third. STAC tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the inning following a leadoff walk, a triple and a sac fly to go up 6-1.
New Haven got one back in the eighth inning as Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on an error. Giovanelli later came through with a two-out single to plate Budzik, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
Spartan's starter Chris Cepeda went the distance, allowing just two earned runs, eight hits and no walks, while striking out 10 for the complete game win.
The Chargers will return to the Northeast this week and resume action on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Felician. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
