PLEASANTVILE, N.Y. – The New Haven baseball team came up on the short end of a pitcher's duel on Wednesday afternoon, falling at Pace by a score of 2-0. Sophomore Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) had two of New Haven's six hits, going 2-for-4. Pace finished with five hits, scoring both of their runs in the first inning. The Chargers drop to 7-9 (1-2 NE10) on the season, while Pace moves to 12-7 (2-3 NE10).
New Haven stranded two runners in the top of the first. The Setters then took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning on an infield single and a ground rule double, followed by a pair of sacrifice flies.
Following the first, Chargers' starter Christopher Leindecker (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) did not allow another baserunner until the sixth inning, retiring 16 Setters in a row, and 21 of the last 23 batters he faced overall. Leindecker finished the game allowing two runs on just four hits and no walks over seven innings of work.
Junior Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) stuck out two, while working around a hit and a walk in a scoreless eighth inning of relief.
Despite the effort on the mound, the Chargers' offense was unable to muster any runs against three Pace pitchers. New Haven got the first two runners on to begin the second inning with a walk and a single, but were unable to score. Pace starter Alex Busby then settled in on the mound, retiring the next 12 batters in a row before Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) drew a walk with one out in the sixth inning. Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) followed with a single to right center, but a strikeout-caught stealing double play ended the New Haven threat.
New Haven made noise once again in the eighth inning with Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) and Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) reaching on back-to-back singles with one out, but a fly out and strikeout thwarted the rally.
Down to their final three outs, Giovanelli got the Chargers started with a single to leadoff the ninth, but was unable to advance as Pace's Dan Wirchanski got the final three outs for the save.
The Chargers will return home this coming Sunday, March 31 for a non-conference doubleheader against Caldwell. First pitch from Frank Vieira Field is scheduled for noon.
