Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Chargers Set Record for Single Season Wins in 4-3 Victory Over STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. – Junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) scored a tiebreak victory at fifth singles to clinch the 11th win of the year for the University of New Haven women's tennis team in a 4-3 decision over the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans. The win passed last year's record of 10 victories, which was also set against the Spartans.

Clyne was joined by senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) in leading the Chargers as Burridge earned a pair of victories on the day. Burridge's first victory of the day partnered with junior Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) at third doubles as they took a 6-2 decision over the Spartans Cassandra Rohr and Anna Ristova. Burridge would then pick up a point for the Blue and Gold at fourth singles defeating STAC's Maya O'Brien 6-4, 7-6.

With the match tied at 3-3, the fifth singles match became the most important of the day. After winning the opening set 6-4, Clyne dropped a 6-1 decision to her counterpart Chiara Dittrich. The two would proceed to the tiebreaker to determine the match victory with Clyne coming out on top 6-2 for her fourth singles victory of the season.

Also earning points for New Haven was sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) and senior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) who took victories at first and sixth singles, respectively. Both would win in straight sets with Gonzalez defeating Katarina Lopez 6-3, 6-4 and Burridge taking down Ulyana Kitcmanuk in identical 6-2, 6-2 decision.

Due to impending inclement weather in the Philadelphia, Pa. area, the Chargers Sunday afternoon match at the University of the Sciences has been cancelled. New Haven will return to the courts one final time this season when they host Simmons on Saturday, April 20. Opening serve against the Sharks is slated for 12:00 p.m.
