NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven baseball team was unable to get any traction on Tuesday afternoon, falling 17-0 in a rout at crosstown rival Southern Connecticut State. Freshman Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) reached base twice for New Haven (11-16, 5-8 NE10), going 1-for-2 with a single in the third and a walk in the sixth. Freshman Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) added a single for the Chargers in the top of the ninth. Freshman Ben Shadeck (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) struck out the side in the seventh in his only inning of relief for three of the Chargers' seven strikeouts on the day.

The Owls started the game fast, scoring 12 runs in the first four innings and pounding out 18 total hits in the game. In his first start of the season, Owls' starter Quantique White tossed a complete game two-hit shutout, issuing one walk and striking out six, while facing just two batters over the minimum.

Southern (15-21, 6-10 NE10) struck quickly, putting together four hits to plate three runs in the first for the early 3-0 advantage. The Owls tacked on five more runs in the second inning, putting the first seven batters on base. After a run-scoring wild pitch and a RBI single, Southern's Nick Lamberti drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give SCSU a 7-0 lead. After a single and walk loaded the bases with nobody out, the Chargers picked up a 4-6-3 double play that plated a run to bring the score to 8-0, before ending the inning on a strikeout.

One inning later, Lamberti struck again for the Owls by driving in two runs with a two-out triple, and then scored one batter later on a single as the Owls upped the lead to 11-0 after three. Southern then got the lead to a dozen in the fourth inning following another RBI double with two outs.

After Chiaro's leadoff single to left field in the third inning, the first hit of his collegiate career, White retired eight consecutive New Haven hitters before Chairo drew a walk leading off the sixth inning. But, a lineout and two fielder's choices ended the frame without a run.

SCSU used a leadoff double and a sac fly to push the lead to 13-0 in the last of the sixth. Shadeck entered for New Haven in the seventh and struck out all three batters he faced, the last two looking, to keep the deficit at 13.

Southern finished off the offensive assault with four runs in the eighth, all coming after two outs on a single, then a bases clearing three-run triple down the right field line to go up 17-0.

Budzik lined a one-out single into right-center field with one down in the ninth for New Haven's second hit, but White rebounded by inducing his second double play of the afternoon to finish off the game.

New Haven will return home for a three-game series against Le Moyne, starting on Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
