WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven baseball team came up on the short end of an 8-3 defeat against Le Moyne on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Dolphins finished off the three-game season sweep of the Chargers by putting up eight runs on 12 hits and holding New Haven to four hits, including one through the first seven innings. Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford) and James Myers (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) each had a hit and a run scored, Andrew Garcia (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue Medford) had a hit, RBI and two walks, and Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) went 1-for-2 with a RBI single. Dominic Rutigliano (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) retired all three hitters he faced in a scoreless inning of relief.
Le Moyne (18-19, 9-8 NE10) put a run on the board in each of the first two innings off Chargers' starter Izaiya Mestre (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic). After a leadoff double to start the game, Andrew Taft lined a RBI double to the left field fence to plate the Dolphins' first run. Le Moyne then loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning, and pushing across a run to go up 2-0 on a balk. Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) then cut down a runner at the plate on a ground ball for the first out, then Mestre got a strike out swinging and a fly ball to center to end the inning with just the one run allowed.
New Haven (11-19, 5-11 NE10) put a runner on base in every inning except the ninth. After putting men on in the first two innings, including a leadoff single by Garcia to start the second, double plays in each inning kept the New Haven off the board.
Le Moyne put five runs on the board in the top of the third to take a commanding 7-0. After a leadoff walk, Taft drove his second RBI double of the game to the wall in right-center for a run. After a throwing error plated Le Moyne's fourth run, the Dolphins scored again off back-to-back singles to go up 5-0, then then executed a double steal, followed by a two-run single with two outs to go up 7-0.
New Haven came right back in the bottom of the third by manufacturing a run. George Pappas (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) drew one of his two walks of the game leading off and later came in to score on a throwing error with two outs to get the Chargers on the board.
New Haven put the leadoff man on in the fourth courtesy of a walk, and put a runner on with one out in the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to score. Le Moyne padded the lead with a run in the sixth following two singles to take an 8-1 lead.
Le Moyne starter Joe Vail allowed just one hit and no earned runs in his seven innings of work while striking out 10 to earn the win. New Haven broke through for two runs against the bullpen in the eighth inning. Myers and Chamberlain used back-to-back singles to put men at the corners with nobody out. Garcia then lifted a sac fly to right-center to plate Myers with New Haven's second run, and Boag followed with a RBI knock to right-center to score Chamberlain and make it 8-3.
Rutigliano retired the side in order with a quick top of the ninth, firing eight of his 11 pitches for strikes.
New Haven has a quick turnaround and will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Pace in a NE10 Southwest Division matchup. First pitch from Pleasantville, N.Y. is set for 3:30 p.m.
