WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) earned a singles victory in straight sets on Saturday afternoon, but the New Haven women's tennis team took a 6-1 defeat at home against Holy Cross.
Gonzalez took her match in straight sets, both by scores of 6-2 to pick up her 10th victory of the season at No. 1 singles. Elsewhere in singles, senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) dropped the first set to Holy Cross' Morgan McGuire 7-5, before rallying to take the second set 6-2. In the decisive third set, McGuire came out on top by a 10-7 decision.
The Chargers also picked up a victory at No. 2 doubles as the duo of juniors Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) took an 8-4 decision, but the Crusaders earned the team point by virtue of winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The Chargers will conclude their three-match weekend homestand on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. when they host SUNY Geneseo at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
