THE LEAD
With a pair of three-set sweeps the only two results thus far at Charger Gymnasium, the New Haven volleyball team puts its 2-0 record at home on the line on Tuesday night when they host Molloy. The Lions enter Tuesday night with a 7-1 overall record, opening the season up 7-0 before falling to Bentley on Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY
New Haven and Molloy meet for the 17th time in the history of the two programs with the series dating back to the 1993 season. The Chargers opened up the series winning the first 15 meetings with the only loss against the Lions coming on September 8 last season. That meeting last year was the first time the two programs met since 2007.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS
The Chargers opened up their home slate with a pair of three set sweeps against Post and Bloomfield. Sophomore outside hitter
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) led the Chargers offense in both outings. She opened up the week with her third-straight double double with 13 kills and 13 digs against Post and then dropped in eight kills in the win over Bloomfield. Senior outside hitter
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) also had a big match against Bloomfield on Saturday afternoon when she collected seven kills in 11 attempts without an error for an impressive .636 hitting percentage. For the season, Fera leads the team with 61 kills, while Nowicki and junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) follow with 55 and 53 kills, respectively. Defensively, freshman libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) leads New haven with 108 digs, while junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) has returned 14 of her opponents attacks to lead the Blue and Gold.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Molloy opened up the season with a pair of weekend tournaments, first hosting their own before traveling to Bentley for the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament this past weekend. In their home event, the Lions finished a perfect 4-0 before extending that early hot start to 7-0 this past weekend before falling in five sets to Bentley to close out the weekend. For the season, Molloy is led by fifth year outside hitter Carly Banks who has collected 105 kills, the only player with triple digits. Following her is junior middle Kacey Affrunti with 84 kills, while she leads the team with a .349 attack percentage and has a team-best 16 service aces.
UP NEXT
Following the match-up with Molloy, the Chargers will travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to play in the Lions home gym for a pair of neutral court matches against Lewis (Friday, 5:00 p.m.) and Holy Family (Saturday, 11 a.m.).
