WALTHAM, Mass. – A clean sweep of doubles matches and five out of six singles victories earned women's tennis a 6-1 decision over Bentley this afternoon to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Freshmen
Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) and
Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) earned a shutout win at second doubles, with the pairings of
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) and
Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) at third doubles and
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) and
Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) each taking down their opponents 6-2.
Moving to singles, Mika earned a straight-set shutout (6-0, 6-0) at second doubles. Following her was Banks who won her match 6-2, 6-4, and Orlando, 6-4, 6-0.
MacPhail gave up just one game at fifth singles winning 6-0, 6-1, while
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) rounded out final singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the six spot.
New Haven improves to 2-2 on the year and in Northeast-10 conference action and will hit the court again Sunday, Sept. 22 when they return home to host American International.
