WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A pair of freshman shutouts helped lead New Haven women's tennis to a 7-0 victory over American International on Saturday afternoon at the New Haven Tennis Courts.
Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and
Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) took down their opponents in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, at the fifth and sixth singles respectively. Fellow freshman
Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) along with
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) won their matches at the third and fourth singles spots, dropping just one game each en route to 6-0, 6-1 victories.
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) took down her opponent 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets and
Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) wrapped up singles play, winning 6-3, 2-6 and 10-5 on a tiebreak at first and second singles, respectively.
In doubles, the pairing of Orlando and graduate
Nicole Calabrese (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) won in a shutout 6-0 at third doubles. Banks and Gonzalez won the first doubles match 6-4, and Mika and Rodriguez at second singles won 6-2 completed a clean sweep of all nine matches.
The Chargers improved to 3-2 on the year and in conference play, and will head to Long Island Wednesday for a midweek meeting with Adelphi at 2:00 p.m.
