WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven men's soccer team will look to make it two wins in a row on Saturday night in their Northeast-10 Conference opener against American International. The match will be the final game in a four-match homestand to start the season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Chargers will look to win their third in a row against AIC, entering Saturday with a 12-13-1 record all-time against the Yellow Jackets. The Chargers have beaten AIC by one goal each of the last two years. AIC had won eight in a row prior to that from 2009-2016.
SCOUTING THE CHARGERS (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NE10)
New Haven used a trio of first half goals to cruise to a 3-0 win on Tuesday night against Nyack. Senior
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) scored twice in the win, moving his season total to three goals. His three goals have him tied for sixth in the NE10, and his six points are tied for ninth.
Sophomore
JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) has scored a goal in each of the last two games, the first two of his career. Junior
Zachary Almonte (New Hempstead, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) has the Chargers' other tally on the season.
New Haven has had a good amount of success off set pieces so far this season, scoring three goals through three games off corner kicks, one in each game.
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) has two assists on the season, both coming on corner kicks.
In the season-opening 3-2 win over Bridgeport, the Chargers received a strong defensive effort from its back line, making three defensive saves, including two from sophomore
Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos). Senior
Stefano Lorusso (Auckland, New Zealand/Sacred Heart College) made four saves in goal for New Haven.
The Chargers then suffered a frustrating 2-1 setback to Molloy on Sept. 8, despite outshooting the Lions 26-11 and hitting four posts in the match.
The team features a number of new faces to this year's program, with 12 new players added to this year's roster, including eight incoming freshmen. New Haven was selected to finish 11th in the NE10 Preseason Poll.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS (2-1-0, 0-0-0 CACC)
AIC is coming off its first loss of the season, a 2-0 road defeat at Bridgeport back on September 11. The Yellow Jackets scored four goals in each of their first two games, taking out Bloomfield 4-2 and needing overtime to beat New York Tech 4-3.
Felipe Novelini and Josip Validzik have two goals apiece while Connor Hicks had added a pair of assists, including a three-point night against New York Tech.
AIC was tabbed to finish seventh in the NE10 preseason poll following a 7-9-2 (5-6-2 NE10) record last season.
ON DECK
The Chargers will hit the road for the first time in 2019 this coming week to face nationally ranked No. 1 Adelphi on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
