WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A trio of second half goals by American International was enough to down the New Haven men's soccer team by a score of 3-0 on Saturday evening at Kathy Zolad Stadium. The Yellow Jackets outshot New Haven 16-10 overall, while New Haven earned six corners to AIC's three. New Haven also had a pair of goals overturned in a frustrating evening for the Blue and Gold. The Chargers move to 2-2, while AIC improves to 3-1 after the conference opener for both teams.
After a slow first 15 minutes, the pace picked up and the Yellow Jackets registered the first scoring chance, but drilled the crossbar. The Chargers appeared to have score the game's first goal in the 18th minute when
Jon Calvo (Vitoria, Spain/Olabide Ikastola) and
Alvaro Ezpeleta (Vigo, Spain/Colegio Amor de Dios) teamed up to thread the ball to
Nate Peduzzi (Old Lyme, Conn./Lyme-Old Lyme) on the doorstep, who buried the ball in the net, but they play was ruled offside.
With the game scoreless at halftime, the Yellow Jackets was little time getting on the board in the second half, using a pass to split the New Haven defense down the middle of the field, leading to a Connor Hicks goal for the 1-0 AIC lead.
The Chargers saw several opportunities to draw even, including a redirect on goal from
Alessandro Pappalardo (Rome, Italy/Stamford) in the 59th minute, which was saved.
Estanislao Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) later sent a ball into the box on a free kick, then raced back seconds later to slide and knock the ball away, thwarting an odd-man rush from the Yellow Jackets.
New Haven also had three shots from near the left post in the 62nd minute, but had two blocked and a third one saved before the ball was cleared out.
The Chargers appeared to net the equalizer once more in the 79th minute, but the presumptive goal by Puduzzi was wiped out due to a foul call on the goal line.
AIC then put the game away with a pair of insurance goals in the 83rd and 85th minutes, one coming on a shot from the left, and the other being set up by a pass from midfield down towards the top of the box for a breakaway.
New Haven will hit the road this coming Wednesday night for a showdown at No. 1 Adelphi.
