ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Sophomore hitter
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) dropped in 15 kills and returned 16 digs to lead the New Haven volleyball team to a four-set win over Holy Family on Saturday at Molloy's Quelay Gymnasium. The Chargers dropped the opening set 21-25 before rattling off three-straight set victories (25-17, 25-20, 25-18).
Fera's 15 kills was the only player in double figures while senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) joined her in leading the team falling just short of double digits with nine hammers. Feral also led the Chargers with a .375 attack percentage with her 15 kills coming on 32 attempts with three errors. Nowicki would suffer just one error on 31 attempts. Rounding out the leading hitters was junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) who finished with seven kills.
As a team, New Haven finished the match hitting .224 with 45 combined kills on 152 attempts with 11 errors. Leading the Blue and Gold to their fourth plus-.200 hitting match was junior setter
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) who collected 21 assists. Joining her was freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) with 17 assists while she added to that a match-best five aces, part of 11 total for New Haven. Chan also added four aces while Greathead and Fera chipped in with one apiece.
Defensively, four different players racked up double figure digs led by freshman libero
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) with 25 digs, her fourth match of the season with 20-plus. Following her and Fera was Greathead and Chan who finished with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Chargers also combined to finish with eight total blocks led by junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) and freshman
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) who finished with five and four returns, respectively.
New Haven will return to the court on Tuesday night, September 24, when they travel to Springfield, Mass. for a date with the American International Yellow Jackets. The NE10 opener for both teams is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
