Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) and 13 kills from rookie
Emily Barry (Freeport, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), the New Haven women's volleyball team opened up Northeast-10 Conference play with a four set (26-19, 24-26, 25-23, 27-25) win over American International.
Joining the pair of double digit hitters in leading the Blue and Gold on the night was sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) and junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) who each dropped in eight kills. Among all the leading hitters, Barry led the Chargers with a .370 average with her 13 kills coming on 27 attempts with a trio of errors.
As a team, New Haven hit .183 for the match, combining for 55 total kills in 180 attempts. Running the Chargers offense on the night was a pair of setters, junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) and freshman
Sammie Paguia (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) who finished with 26 and 14 assists, respectively. The Chargers also combined to finish with 10 service aces, led by Greathead who recorded four. Fera added a trio of aces while freshman
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) added a pair.
Guarniere, the Chargers rookie libero, led New Haven's defensive performance with 18 digs, one of four players to register double figures. Joining her was Fera (17 digs), Chan (14) and Greathead (12) with Chan and Greathead combining to record a double double on the night.
New Haven also finished with six total blocks with senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) and sophomore
Jalynn Finnie (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) who each stuffed three of the Yellow Jackets attack attempts. Following the pair was Garden who blocked a pair of AIC attacks.
New Haven will return to the hardwood on Saturday for a second-straight NE10 match when they travel to the capital of the Empire State, Albany, to take on the Saint Rose Golden Knights. First serve between the two conference foes is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
