WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A flurry of four goals in the second half helped the No. 4 Saint Anselm field hockey team pull away from New Haven for a 6-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at DellaCamera Stadium. The Chargers now sit a 3-6 (3-3 NE10), while the Hawks, who have yet to allow a goal all season, move to 7-0 (5-0 NE10).
Saint Anselm scored quickly; just 3:19 into the game when Carly LaCasse scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon. Hannah Friend followed in the second quarter, taking a centering pass from LaCasse and scoring in front for a 2-0 lead, which the Hawks carried into halftime.
Saint Anselm put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in both the third and fourth quarters. LaCasse deflected a shot from near the top of the circle in the 36th minute for her second tally of the game, and Maeve Murphy put home a rebound after a deflected shot in the 45th minute to make it a 4-0 lead.
Shelby Dunn scored off a penalty corner in the 51st minute, taking an insert pass from Friend. Maggie Malloy then capped the scoring in the 54th minute after taking a pass from the left side along the goal line, and one-timing it from right in front for the 6-0 lead.
The Chargers will return to the field this Wednesday at 4 p.m. at rival Southern Connecticut State.
