MANCHESTER, N.H. – A sweep of doubles and five-of-six victories at singles led to a 6-1 victory for the New Haven women's tennis team over Saint Anselm, improving to 4-3 overall and in NE10 conference play.
Three Chargers earned a pair of victories on the day, earning a doubles victory and scoring a point in singles play. Among those who earned two wins on the day was junior
Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) whose straight set win at third singles secured New Haven's fourth victory of the season. Rodriguez defeated the Hawks Emily Jacy 6-4, 6-0. In doubles play, Rodriguez was partnered with
Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) at first singles defeating Saint Anselm's Jacy and Kaitlin Hughes.
Joining Rodriguez in earning a pair of points on the day was freshman
Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) and senior
Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip). In doubles play, Banks was partnered with
Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) to earn a 6-0 shutout of the Hawks Anastasia Kapothanasis and Josie Hulbert at second doubles. Banks went on to earn a victory at second singles taking down Kapothanasis in a hard fought 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) decision.
Clyne was partnered with senior
Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y./Islip) at third doubles with her 6-1 decision over Abby Parke and Parker Petruney the first victory of the day in doubles play. In singles action, Clyne secured the third point of the day with her 6-2, 6-1 win over Parke.
Also earning victories in singles action was a pair of freshman
Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and
Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) and fourth and fifth singles, respectively. MacPhail was the first of the day to earn a singles victory when she shut out the Hawks Petruney in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Orlando's victory at fourth singles came over Maikah Bulpitt with scores of 6-3, 6-1.
The Chargers will return to the court in less than 24 hours when they return to West Haven for a non-conference match with the Molloy Lions. First serve from West Haven, Conn. is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
