BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The New Haven women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday on the final day of the Ferris State Invitational, falling 3-1 to Seton Hill (Pa.), followed by a hard fought 3-2 defeat in the nightcap to Wayne State.
MATCH ONE: Seton Hill 3, New Haven 1
The Chargers had three players finish with double digit kills in the match with sophomore
Ruby Fera (Seattle, Wash./Ballard) leading the team with 13, along with junior
Kali Greathead (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley) at 11 and senior
Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview) with 10. Junior
Angela Chan (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) collected 38 of the teams 41 assists, while contributing 20 digs. Freshman
Julia Guarniere (Milford, N.H./Milford) led the way defensively with a match-high 30 digs, and sophomore
Jalynn Finnie (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added six blocks to total 10 between the two matches.
After falling 25-18 in the first set, the Chargers rebounded to take the second set 25-23. After falling behind 16-14, New Haven took the lead for good following a 4-0 run that featured two points from Fera and a pair of kills from Greathead. The Griffins took the next two sets by scores of 25-18 and 25-19.
MATCH TWO: Wayne State 3, New Haven 2
The two teams alternated wins throughout the hard fought five sets, with four being decided by less than three points. Fera and Nowicki led the way with 17 kills apiece. Chan added 51 assists, and Guarniere and Fera each topped the 20-dig plateau while junior
Camille Garden (Atlanta, Ga./Landmark Christian) contributed six blocks.
WSU captured the first set 25-17 before the Chargers surged out to a 9-2 lead in the second set, growing the lead to a match-high 10 points at 18-8. Wayne State went on to win 13 of the next 19 points before the Chargers were able to finish off the set 25-22.
The Chargers held an 8-6 lead in the third set before Wayne State took control with an 8-1 run for a 14-9 advantage. The Chargers battled back to retie the match 23-23 following a 4-0 burst, before dropping the next two points to conclude the set.
New Haven rallied to claim the fourth set 26-24 after surging on a 6-1 run to end the set. Trailing 24-22, Fera and Greathead fended off consecutive match points with a pair of kills to tie the score before the Chargers forced back-to-back attack errors to claim the victory and force a decisive fifth set.
The back-and-forth swings continued into the fifth set, with the lead changing hands 10 times before Wayne State used three straight points to claim the 15-13 win.
For her performance during the tournament, Nowicki was selected to the all-tournament team after posting a .265 hitting percentage with 44 kills over the four matches.
The Blue and Gold will come home to Charger Gymnasium for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 12 to take on Post at 7 p.m.
