COLCHESTER, Vt. – Backed by four players scoring in double figures, led by Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who scored a game-high 29 points, the New Haven men's basketball team ran past Saint Michael's 82-63 on the road on Saturday afternoon. Rowland's 29 points came on an 11-for-14 shooting performance, including a 5-for-6 clip from three-point range, while adding four assists and two steals.

Senior Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) dropped 23 points while freshman Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) scored 17 points on 6-of-10 from the field. Antonio Lopez (Medford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting. The Chargers outrebounded Saint Michael's 32-27 and shot over 57 percent in the game, including 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from three-point range. New Haven (5-8, 3-4 NE10) also reined in points at the free throw line, where they went 16-for-18.

The Chargers ran off a quick 11-0 run to build an 11-3 lead over the first four minutes, thanks to a pair of threes from Rowland and one from Thomas. The Purple Knights scored nine of the next 12 points to get within 14-12 at the 11:36 mark, but the Chargers buckled down and got the lead back up to as many as 15 before halftime.

Rowland and Bailey scored four points apiece to build an 8-0 run and make it 22-12. The duo then each knocked down a three-pointer of their own to grow the run to 16-2 overall, and Lopez added his lone three-pointer of the afternoon with 1:46 left until halftime to give New Haven its largest lead of the first half, 35-20. New Haven shot exactly 50 percent overall and from beyond the arc in the first half, holding a 13-point edge at the break.

The Chargers offense lifted the team in the second half, shooting over 65 percent in the second stanza and knocking down five of their eight shots from beyond the arc.

Saint Michael's got within 11 in the opening moments of the second half, but the Chargers used a 12-4 spurt to quickly build the lead back up to 19 points, 47-28 by the 15-minute mark.

Back-to-back threes from Rowland and Bailey, paired with a Rowland layup and a Charger free throw pushed the lead to a game-high 27, 59-32, as part of nine unanswered points for the Blue and Gold.

Saint Michael's did not go away, using an extended run of 19-6 over the middle stages of the half to get back within 65-51 with 6:01 to play. The Chargers answered and grew the lead back to 20 on three different occasions, including three straight from Lopez with four minutes left and a layup from Thomas in the final minute.

New Haven will return home on Tuesday evening to face off against No. 17/18 Bentley. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
