WEST HAVEN, Conn. – A day of upsets at Charger Gymnasium as the New Haven men's basketball team ran away with a 72-42 victory over the No. 17/18 Bentley Falcons on Tuesday night at Charger Gym. Leading the Blue and Gold on the night was redshirt junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) who dropped in 18 points, one of four players to finish in double figures.
The 18 points for Rowland is his third game over the last four in double figures, increasing his average over that stretch to 21.5 points per game. The Cohoes, N.Y. native finished the game shooting 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc which combined with his last outing he is 9-of-12 from long range for a 75-percent average.
Joining Rowland in leading the Blue and Gold was seniors
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) and
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) who finished with 14 and 12 points respectively, while freshman forward
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) registered his sixth straight game in double figures with 15 points. All 15 of Thomas' points came from outside the arc where he finished 5-of-8, while the rookie also secured his first double double of the season with a career-high 10 boards.
As a team, the Chargers closed out the game shooting 52.9 percent from the field, connecting on 27-of-51 field goal attempts. Among the 27 total field goals were a dozen from beyond the three point arc while they also added six points at the free throw line, in nine attempts. The Chargers also captured the battle of the boards with a 37-27 margin, the largest of the season, with Thomas' 10 leading all players in the game. Felizor followed him with nine rebounds.
Combined, New Haven collected 14 total assists, led by Rowland who dished out a half dozen helpers for his seventh game of the season with 5+ assists. Felizor also added to his 12 points and nine boards by blocking a pair of the Falcons 52 shot attempts.
Defensively, the Blue and Gold held Bentley to less than half of their 83.6 points per game average, while limiting the Falcons to just 26.9 percent shooting (14-of-52). Coming into the night, Bentley was shooting at better than a 50% clip from the field, while they also averaged 40.1 percent from long range, while connecting on just 6-of-23 from downtown (26.1) in Charger Gym.
The Chargers continue their month of weekend road games when they travel to North Easton, Mass. for a date with the Stonehill Skyhawks on Saturday, January 18. Opening tip against the Northeast Division rival is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., following the women's game.
