Chargers Score Season-High to Storm Past Saint Michael’s 75-49

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Four Chargers scored in double figures to help New Haven run past Saint Michael's 75-49 on the road on Saturday afternoon. The 75-point output marked the first time New Haven eclipsed the 70-point threshold this season, as the Chargers shot an even 50 percent from the floor, and outscored Saint Michael's 37-6 off turnovers, 56-22 in the paint, and 12-4 in transition. The Chargers also outrebounded Saint Michael's 39-34.

Senior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led all scorers with 24 points on 10-of-13 from the floor and three blocks. Sophomore Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting with seven rebounds, and junior Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) had 14 points, five steals, and four assists on 6-of-12 shooting. Freshman Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) tallied her third double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

New Haven (11-3, 5-2 NE10) shot at least 40 percent in each quarter, including a 50 percent clip or higher in the first, third and fourth quarters.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: Debbie Buff
"This was by far our best game of the year both offensively and defensively. Saint Michael's is a good rebounding team and they have played most of the top teams close this season. Our team really locked in and followed our game plan. We were far more disciplined, deliberate with our passes and were locked in from the start. I'm really proud to get back in the win column on the road."

FIRST QUARTER
  • New Haven started fast out of the gate and never looked back, opening up the game on an 11-2 run, including seven points from Wormack.
  • The Purple Knights emerged from a timeout with a 7-2 run to cut it to 13-9 with just over one minute remaining in the quarter.
  • A free throw, then quick steal and layup off an inbounds by Chambers grew the lead to 16-9 before the Purple Knights capitalized on an offensive rebound and hit a three-pointer to make it 16-12 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • For the second straight quarter, the Chargers started hot, sprinting out to a 13-2 run to take a 15-point lead, 29-14, at the 4:09 mark. The run featured a three-pointer from Chambers, and culminated with a nifty pass from Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) to Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) underneath who finished off the layup.
  • Chambers added another steal-and-score to get the lead back to 15, 35-20, with 1:04 to play, helping the Chargers carry a 35-22 lead into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
  • New Haven had its best shooting quarter in the third, going 9-for-14 (64.3 percent) from the floor and outscoring Saint Michael's 25-13 to take a 60-35 lead going into the fourth.
  • The Purple Knights got within 10 points at the 6:51 mark, but the Chargers responded with a huge 15-2 run to put the game away.
  • Wormack highlighted the run with a steal and took it the length of the court for a layup to make it 49-31, and DeBose got the lead to 20 for the first time with a three-pointer that made it 52-31 at the 3:45 mark.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Aliyah Wright (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) drove the lane untouched for a layup that put the lead at 30 for the first time, 70-40 midway through the period, and Chambers pushed it to a game-high 31 (74-43) after swimming though the lane and hitting a short jumper with 3:23 left.
New Haven will return home on Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. to face No. 19 Bentley as part of the Chargers' annual Class at the Court game.
