Women’s Basketball Slipped up at Stonehill, 63-45

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The New Haven women's basketball team was slipped up on the road on Saturday afternoon in a 63-45 setback at Stonehill. Senior Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and junior Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) each scored in double figures and tallied five rebounds apiece, with Wormack scoring 13 points and Chambers netting 10. Freshman Aurora Deshiaes added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

New Haven (12-4, 6-3 NE10) finished the game shooting 35 percent, while Stonehill (11-4, 7-2 NE10) shot 39.0 percent overall and knocked down 11 three-pointers. Both teams hauled in 38 rebounds apiece and the Chargers outscored the Skyhawks 36-20 in the paint.

FIRST QUARTER
  • Wormack scored the Chargers first four points as Stonehill used a pair of threes to hold a 6-4 lead through the midway point of the quarter. They then scored four unanswered to take a 10-4 lead, forcing a New Haven timeout at 3:53.
  • Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) ended a 6-0 run with a putback, and Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) grabbed a steal and took it to the hoop herself to get back within 12-8 with just over one minute remaining. Wormack added a trey and later added a free throw 4.4 seconds remaining to pull the Chargers within 15-11 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
  • The Charger deficit grew to double digits at 21-11 as Stonehill rattled off the first six points of the second quarter.
  • Deshaies and Wormack made it 21-15 with back-to-back layups, but Stonehill used a pair of threes to answer New Haven's baskets to push the lead to as much as 12 at the 5:14 mark.
  • Back-to-back layups from Deshaies got New Haven within 29-21 with 4:22 to play, but Stonehill responded with another 7-0 run, helped by two blocks on the defensive end to grow the lead to 36-21 with 2:25 left, forcing a Charger timeout.
  • Stonehill nearly doubled-up the Chargers 23-12 in the second quarter and held a 38-23 lead at halftime. Stonehill shot over 56 percent in the period to shoot 53.8 percent in the first half, while holding New Haven to a 38.5 percent clip from the floor.
THIRD QUARTER
  • Wormack knocked in a driving layup in the early minutes of the third, but a 7-2 run for Stonehill built the lead to 20 just over three minutes in.
  • The Skyhawks held New Haven to 4-of-14 in the period and grew the lead to a game-high 24 points on two occasions late to hold a 55-31 lead after three.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Deshaies and DeBose put in consecutive layups to start the fourth as Stonehill called timeout at 7:10 with the score 57-37.
  • The baskets started a 10-0 New Haven run, during which Stonehill was held scoreless for 7:31.
  • Chambers drove the lane for a layup, then moments later used a putback to cap the 10-0 spurt and pull the team within 14 at 57-43 with 2:04 left.
  • All told, New Haven outscored Stonehill 14-8 in the final frame and held the Skyhawks to just 3-of-15 from the floor.
New Haven will return to Charger Gymnasium for their next game on Wednesday evening to face Saint Anselm at 5:30 pm.
