WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The New Haven women's basketball team saw its 11-game home court winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening in a tough 58-50 loss to Saint Anselm. Freshman
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) netted 10 points to go with seven rebounds on 5-for-9 shooting, sophomore
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) added 12 points and senior
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) added seven points on 3-of-5 shooting and
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) added a career-high seven steals.
New Haven outshot the Hawks 40.4 percent to 32.8 percent overall, and outscored Saint A's 32-20 in the paint. The Chargers were outrebounded for the first time all season by a 39-35 margin, and Saint Anselm outscored New Haven 27-19 off turnovers.
Saint Anselm moves to 12-4 (8-2 NE10) with the win, while the Chargers drop to 12-5 (6-4 NE10).
FIRST QUARTER
- After a slow start, the Chargers went on a 6-0 run to take a 6-4 lead, hitting three consecutive field goals, including two from Deshaies and one from Chambers.
- Ocasio hit a jumper in the final minute to put New Haven up 8-6 after one, which concluded with the Chargers shooting 44.4 percent from the floor.
- New Haven held the Hawks to a 2-for-20 clip in the opening 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
- Saint Anselm connected on 6-of-12 field goals in the second quarter to take a 22-20 lead into halftime.
- New Haven scored six of the first eight points of the period to take a 14-8 lead after three straight jumpers from Chambers, Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) and Wormack.
- After a Wormack jumper pushed the edge to 17-10 at 6:18, Saint Anselm ripped off a 12-1 run to take a 22-18 lead with 1:13 on the clock.
- A Deshaies layup with 12 seconds remaining pulled the Chargers within two heading into the locker room.
THIRD QUARTER
- Wormack quickly knotted the game in the opening seconds of the third, and Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) retied the game at 25 with a hoop, foul and free throw at 8:22.
- An 11-1 run for Saint Anselm put the Hawks ahead for good and grew the lead to double digits, 36-26, with 1:40 remaining.
- Chambers quelled the run with a jumper in the final minute, and DeBose knocked down a three moments later to get New Haven back within 39-33 after three quarters.
FOURTH QUARTER
- New Haven opened the fourth by scoring eight of the first nine points to pull within 43-41 with at 5:27.
- Another three-pointer from DeBose brought the deficit down to just one a 4:27, and a Deshaies later answered a Hawks' hoop with a short jumper of her own in the paint to make it 47-46 with 3:23 remaining.
- With the Chargers trailing by one with one minute left, Saint A's went back up by four with a jumper before Wormack connected on the Chargers' eighth field goal in nine attempts to claw the team within 52-50 with 17 seconds left.
- The Hawks used six free throws over the final 17 seconds to hold off the Charger rally for the eight-point win.
The Chargers will hit the road for their next matchup on Saturday afternoon with a trip to Assumption. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
