WORCESTER, Mass. – Four players scored in double figures as the New Haven men's basketball team won its fifth in a row with an 81-77 win at Assumption on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) and junior
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) both scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Chargers (9-8, 7-5 NE10). Sophomore
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) scored 13 point and senior
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) added 12 to go with a game-high seven rebounds. Rowland and Lane each had a game-high five assists.
Bailey finished the game 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, Felizor was 6-for-11 shooting and freshman
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) scored eight points on 4-of-8 shooting.
New Haven finished the game shooting 55.2 percent (32-for-58) from the floor. Assumption (10-8, 4-7 NE10) finished at 48.3 percent overall and 13-of-26 from three-point range. The Chargers controlled the glass by a 32-26 margin, and also outscored the Greyhounds 20-10 off nine Assumption turnovers.
The performance was the third time this season New Haven shot over 55 percent from the floor.
The Hounds carried a two-point lead into halftime after sinking nine three-pointers through the opening 20 minutes. After Felizor started the game with a dunk, Assumption held the lead until there were just under two minutes left in the half.
After falling behind by as much as 11, Lane knocked down a three from the left corner to get New Haven back within 31-23. Down 36-25, New Haven roared back with a 14-2 run to take a one-point lead with 1:47 to go until halftime. Rowland started the run with back-to-back threes to make it 36-31. Felizor later brought the deficit to one, and Rowland knocked down a jumper to put the Chargers on top 39-38.
After four straight by Assumption, Lane sank two from the free throw line with 1.3 seconds left to bring the Chargers within 43-41 going into the locker room.
Trailing by one, the Chargers took control of the game with an extended 19-4 run that built a game-high 15 point lead with just over five minutes remaining. The Chargers took the lead for good at 58-57 at the 13:20 mark on a layup by Lane. Bailey's fourth three of the afternoon pushed the lead to 10 for the first time, 71-61 with 6:54 remaining. Lane followed with a layup and Rowland used a layin and free throw to push the margin to 76-61 with 5:10 to play.
A 9-0 run from Assumption over the next three minutes cut it back to just six, 76-70 with 2:11 to go.
The Charger lead was trimmed to four with 52 seconds left following a layup after a turnover. Rowland ended the 12-0 run with a baseline driving layup to build the lead back to six with 27 seconds left, but the Hounds countered with a transition layup with 22.7 seconds left.
Bailey hit both ends of a one-and-one to make it 80-74 before Assumption made it a one possession game with a three-pointer in transition with 15.3 seconds left. Rowland added one free throw in the closing seconds and a defensive stop helped preserve the four-point win.
The Chargers will head out on the road once again on Tuesday for a NE10 matchup at Southern New Hampshire. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
