MANCHESTER, N.H. – The New Haven men's basketball team's five-game winning streak came to a halt on Tuesday night with an 83-62 loss at Southern New Hampshire. Senior
Elijah Bailey (Freeport, N.Y./The Hotchkiss School) led the Blue and Gold with 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting, and senior
Kessly Felizor (Hightstown, N.J./Hightstown) set a new career-high with four three-pointers to score 18 points. The duo also tied for a team-high five rebounds. Sophomore
Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy) netted nine points and dished out three assists.
The Penmen finished the game shooting just over 53 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc, where they went 15-for-28. New Haven finished shooting at a 46.3 percent clip overall. SNHU held a 31-25 edge in rebounding while the two teams combined for just 15 turnovers.
New Haven stormed out on a 10-2 run to open the contest, including a pair of threes from Felizor over the first 3:51 before the Penmen called timeout. SNHU used a 9-4 stretch to battle back within 18-15 by the 11:46 media timeout.
Bailey ended the streak with a layup, then added a three-pointer after a layup by
D'Nathan Knox (Wheatley Heights, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) to grow the Charger lead to 25-18. From there, SNHU responded by scoring 28 of the next 38 points to close the half.
A 13-2 run pushed the Penmen in front, taking their first lead at the 7:11 mark with a free throw.
Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) sank a pair from the line to end the run and a New Haven scoring drought of 3:10 to get the Chargers within 31-29 at the 4:56 mark.
The run extended to 21-4 run following a three-pointer that made it 39-29 with 2:39 left, prompting a New Haven timeout. Felizor's third three of the half and a basket from
Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) got New Haven within five, but the Penmen scored seven of the next eight to carry an 11-point, 46-35 lead into the locker room.
SNHU scored the first four points of the second half to go up 15, as New Haven called for timeout. Felizor answered with his fourth three of the ballgame to get the team within 13, but that was as close as the Chargers would get as SNHU pushed the lead to 27 just past the midway point of the half and grew the lead to a game-high 30 with 6:29 remaining.
A jumper from Felizor and threes from Bailey and Lane started a 10-0 New Haven run to pull the Chargers within 78-58 by the final timeout at 3:37. SNHU connected on 60.9 percent of their field goals in the second half, including seven of their 11 attempts from downtown to pull away for the 21-point win.
The Chargers will return home to wrap up NE10 cross-divisional play on Saturday against Franklin Pierce at 3:30 p.m.
