SPARKILL, N.Y. – The New Haven women's basketball team suffered a 60-41 defeat on Wednesday evening in their final non-conference matchup of the season at Saint Thomas Aquinas. Junior
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) and freshman
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) led the team with eight points apiece, while
Luzdali Ocasio (Davenport, Fla./New Hampton) scored six points on a pair of three-pointers. Senior
Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) led the team with eight rebounds and added a pair of blocks. Junior
Jasmine White (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) tied her career-high with seven rebounds and Deshaies added six boards and a career-high three blocks.
The 41 points was a season-low for New Haven (10-3, 4-2 NE10), and the Chargers were outshot for the first time this season, as STAC (11-3, 3-0 ECC) shot 42.6 percent to the Chargers 34.8 percent. New Haven held a 39-25 edge on the glass, while STAC outscored New Haven 29-6 off turnovers. Neither team reached the bonus in any of the four quarters, combining for 21 fouls throughout the game.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Chargers took a 9-8 lead at the 5:05 mark when Pergola found Wormack underneath for a layup, prompting a STAC timeout.
- Pergola knocked one down from well beyond the arc to beat the buzzer and give the Chargers a 16-14 lead after one. Pergola went 3-for-4 in the first quarter for eight points.
SECOND QUARTER
- Two free throws by White put new Haven up 20-16 early in the second before STAC scored four straight to tie the score at 20, forcing a New Haven timeout with 5:05 left until halftime.
- White knocked down a right wing three-pointer with 4:48 to go to put New Haven back up 23-20, however the Chargers would be held scoreless for the rest of the half.
- STAC closed the half with an 11-0 run to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
- New Haven missed their last six field goal attempts and committed 10 of their 17 first half turnovers in the second quarter.
THIRD QUARTER
- STAC extended their run to 16-0 by scoring the first five points of the half before Ocasio banked in a three from the right side for the first New Haven basket in nearly eight minutes, to make it 36-26.
- STAC upped the lead to 43-26 by the 3:38 mark, extending their run to 23-3 overall, before Deshaies put in a layup off the Ocasio assists at 3:11.
- STAC grew the lead to 20 for the first time with 30 seconds left, outscoring New Haven 19-5 in the third quarter, holding a 50-28 entering the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Chargers outscored the Spartans 13-10 over the final 10 minutes, keeping them off the scoreboard over the final 3:34.
- Trailing by 27, Ocasio knocked down her second triple of the game from the left corner to make it 55-31 just over two minutes into the fourth.
- DeBose used a strong effort to put in her own rebound at 4:56 to get the Chargers within 58-36.
- Senior Kim Talley (Quakertown, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) knocked down a three-pointer, the grabbed a steal moments later and fed Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) for a breakaway layup to bring the final score to 60-41.
The Chargers will cap a stretch of playing six out of seven games on the road this coming Saturday afternoon with a trip to Saint Michael's for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup.
