MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The New Haven offense exploded for 32 runs in a pair of wins to close out their Myrtle Beach Trip on Sunday. The Chargers lashed out for 19 hits in a 24-6 win over Stonehill on Sunday morning, then returned to upset nationally-ranked No. 12 New York Tech 8-2 in the afternoon.
New Haven's 24 runs against Stonehill were the most in a game by the Chargers since scoring 22 against Concordia in 2018, and the first time they scored at least 24 runs in a game since hanging 26 on Molloy in 2007.
On the mound, freshman
Bryan Pazulski (Media, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) earned the win against NYIT in his collegiate debut, firing 6.0 innings in the nightcap and allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five. In game one,
Dominic Rutigliano (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) struck out five and allowed two runs on two hits in 4.0 innings of relief to earn the win.
Offensively, the Chargers clubbed three long balls against Stonehill from senior
Matt Chamberlain (North Branford, Conn./North Branford), and two grand slams courtesy of freshman
Robert Taylor (Wolcott, Conn./The Gunnery) and sophomore
Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck). Infielders
Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and
Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) each went 5-for-8 with two walks over the doubleheader, with Huber scoring five runs and Cain driving in three. Sophomore shortstop
Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) went 4-for-9 with three walks, three runs and three RBI. Chamberlain reached base eight times in the two games out of the leadoff spot on three hits and five walks to go with a team-leading six RBI.
New Haven concludes their Myrtle Beach trip at 3-1, the 12th-ranked Bears dropped to 4-1 following their first loss of 2020, and Stonehill now sits at 2-2.
NEW HAVEN VS. STONEHILL
The Chargers did all of their damage over four innings with five runs in the first, four in the fourth, five more in the eighth and a 10-spot in the ninth.
Huber got the scoring started with a RBI double to the opposite field down the right field line to score Chamberlain, then three batters later Taylor delivered his first career home run with an opposite field grand slam over the right field wall to stake the Chargers to the early 5-0 lead.
The Skyhawks came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, but New Haven took command with four additional runs in the fourth off three hits. Chamberlain drilled his first home of the season to right field to make it 7-2, and
Tyler Wells (Danville, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) later knocked in a run with a base hit up the middle. Two batters later, Taylor added his fifth RBI of the game with a double down the right field line to plate Wells and give the Chargers a 9-2 lead.
Like the first inning, Stonehill came back with two runs off a two-run homer with two outs to pull within 9-4.
The lead was extended once again in the eighth inning with a five-run outburst, all coming with two outs. Four hits delivered the runs, including a RBI double by
Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington), a RBI single by Cain, a two-run double to center field by Chamberlain and a single by Budzik.
A 10-run top of the ninth polished off the win, as the Chargers pounded out seven hits in the inning, two of which came from Boag, who doubled to right field, then later drilled the team's second grand slam of the morning over the left field wall to make it 24-5 at the time. Chamberlain and
Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) each had back-to-back two-run doubles in the inning.
On the mound, sophomore
Kevin McNiff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) got the start and allowed two runs on four hits over three innings of work while striking out two. Rutigliano was credited with the win in relief.
NEW HAVEN VS. NYIT
For the third time in four games, the Chargers jumped on the board right away in the bottom of the first and didn't look back, putting up three quick runs on the defending East Region champs.
Budzik drew a one out walk and Huber followed with a single, and both came home on a throwing error one batter later for the quick 2-0 lead.
Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) then lifted a sac fly to center field to plate the third run of the inning.
NYIT, who was coming off a 17-2 win over Wilmington earlier in the afternoon, got one run back in the top of the second via a walk and a pair of singles, pulling within 3-1.
On the mound, Pazulski retired the side in order in the first, fourth and fifth innings, and worked around a hit and an error for a scoreless third inning.
The Blue and Gold gave him two more runs of support in the fourth courtesy of a bases loaded, two-run, two-out RBI single up the middle by Budzik to push the lead to 5-1.
The Bears got one run back in the sixth off two hits to get within 5-2, but the Chargers provided another answer with three big insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk by Wells and singles by Huber and Eletto loaded the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout,
Josh Lester (Amityville, N.Y./Copiague) and Cain drew back-to-back walks to force in runs and Boag knocked in another with a fielder's choice to push the edge to 8-2.
The lead was plenty for the Charger bullpen, with
Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) tossing a scoreless seventh, and closer
Brandon LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) tossing two shutout innings to lock down the Chargers third win in a row.
New Haven will return north and are scheduled to take the field next in their home opener on Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. with a doubleheader against Saint Thomas Aquinas at Vieira Field.
