Chargers’ Win Streak Snapped at Le Moyne

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The New Haven women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon in a 77-38 setback at Le Moyne. Syracuse native Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) led the Chargers with 14 points and eight rebounds on 4-of-8 shooting and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford) added nine points and five rebounds for New Haven.

Entering the game with the sixth-best scoring defense in all of Division II, the Chargers (15-7, 9-6 NE10) saw the Dolphins (15-7, 11-4 NE10) sink 16 three-pointers and shoot over 44 percent from the floor. The Chargers outscored Le Moyne 22-16 in the paint.

Deshaies banked home a putback to get the Chargers on the board first on the opening possession. The Dolphins scored the next 15 points before Chambers sank a free throw with 1:39 remaining to make it 15-3 after one quarter.

Deshaies highlighted the second quarter with a pair of three-point plays, one at 9:21 and the second at 2:47, hitting a layup and the ensuing free throw. Le Moyne shot over 40 percent overall, including 7-for-17 from the arc to carry a 36-10 lead into halftime. Deshaies was 3-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line in the opening half for New Haven.

Deshaies completed her third three-point play of the game with a hoop and a foul at 8:35 before following with a free throw. Le Moyne shot a game-high 61 percent from the floor in the third quarter, including 7-of-13 from the arc to hold a 65-19 lead through three quarters.

New Haven found its stride offensively in the fourth, outscoring Le Moyne 19-12 over the final 10 minutes and shooting over 58 percent from the floor. Chambers scored six of her points in the final quarter, and Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) had a pair of second-chance buckets as part of her seven points in the quarter to help New Haven connect on 5-of-6 field goals through the middle portion of the period.

The Chargers will return to upstate New York on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup at Saint Rose.
