Chargers Drop Final Game of Trip to Molloy

CARY, N.C. – A nine-run fifth inning proved to be too much to overcome for the New Haven baseball team in a 10-3 loss on Sunday morning to Molloy in the team's final game of its North Carolina trip. Sophomore designated hitter Thomas Eletto (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley) led the team with three hits, including a triple and a run scored. Junior catcher George Pappas (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) and sophomore outfielder Dylan Chiaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) each had two hits and one run apiece, while Pappas also picked up one RBI. Second baseman Brett Reedy (Enfield, Conn./Enfield) drove in one run on a squeeze play.

New Haven (4-4) scored single runs in the second and fifth innings to build a 2-0 lead midway through the game. Eletto led off the top of the second with a triple to right field and came home on a two-out single by Pappas. In the fifth, Pappas got in on the action once more with a leadoff double to the opposite field in right. After advancing to third on a bunt single by Chiaro, Reedy laid down a safety squeeze up the first base line to plate Pappas with the Chargers second run of the game.

After allowing just three hits and four baserunners through the first four innings, the game turned in the bottom of the fifth when Molloy exploded for nine runs on seven hits and one New Haven error while sending 14 men to the plate. The big blow came on a two-out, three-run bases clearing triple that brought the score to 9-2. Molloy tacked on one more in the sixth inning with a walk, double and sac fly.

Chiaro led off the top of the seventh with a single to center field, moved to third on a wild pitch and ground ball, then came home on a two-out infield single by Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) to make it a 10-3 game.

The Chargers will return north this coming week for their home opener against Saint Anselm in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
