WEST HAVEN, Conn. – As announced by the Northeast-10 Conference on Wednesday, the league's Council of Presidents has voted to approve a recommendation to cancel plans for a repositioned regular season and championship in the conference's seven fall sports. As with its winter sport decision, the presidents agreed that individual institutions maintain the discretion to organize practices and schedule non-conference competitions, dependent on state, regional and local guidelines.
Despite this decision, the Northeast-10, it's Council of Presidents and the University of New Haven remain committed to supporting a return to play for NE10 competition in spring sports (including tennis), whose 2020 seasons were canceled at the outset of the pandemic.
"This was a very difficult decision to make, as we know the important role that athletics plays in the lives of each of our student-athletes," said President Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. "Above all, though, our priority is protecting their health and well-being. We remain committed to ensuring that all of our student-athletes have opportunities to safely interact with their coaches and teammates, as they had throughout the fall semester, and I am confident they will continue to excel in the classroom, in their training, and as ambassadors for the University."
The University remains committed to the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and the local community remains our highest priority. To that extent, we will continue to monitor the pandemic and consider every option moving forward. This includes, but is not limited to, strength training and limited practices upon the start of the spring 2021 semester as well as exploring alternative opportunities for fall and winter sports to compete should it become safe to do so.
"As I said previously, our student-athletes showed great perseverance in dealing with a unique fall semester," said Director of Athletics Sheahon Zenger. "While I know it will be challenging, I'm confident their resilience will be even stronger this spring. As the surge passes, I am hopeful we will get back to practice and competition when it is safe to do so. Until then, our priority continues to be fostering the personal and professional development of each of our student-athletes and ensuring they are prepared for a lifetime of success on and off the field."
