WEST HAVEN, Conn. – All of New Haven's scoring came in the final quarter as the Blue and Gold improved to 8-1 in the Northeat-10 with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans on Tuesday night at DellaCamera Stadium.
After allowing a goal just 64 seconds into the action on a penalty corner awarded to STAC, the Chargers were on their heels until the third quarter when freshman Audrey Larson (Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy) scored the equalizer in the 49th minute. After an initial save by the Spartans keeper that couldn't be cleared defensively, Larson tapped home the game-tying goal to give the Chargers offense some life.
Just barely over four minutes later, the Chargers struck again, this time with senior Morgan McCarty (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) who had come off the bench for New Haven. After another save by the Spartans keeper, STAC was again unable to clear the ball leading to a scrum in front of goal where McCarty punched her second goal of the season over the line for the game-winning tally.
Saint Thomas' early goal came just past the first minute mark when Sofia Cuen drilled a straight shot from the top of the arc, straight off the insertion from Hailey Galison.
Overall, New Haven held a 19-7 advantage in the shot column with the majority of those attempts coming in the first quarter when the Blue and Gold outshot STAC 10-4. Thirteen of those 19 shots were marked on goal with the Spartans keeper Jessie Hohenstein securing 11 saves on the night. On the flip side, graduate keeper Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford), the reigning NE10 Goalkeeper of the Week, was forced to make just one save on the Spartans seven total shots which were split across the first (4) and fourth (3) quarters.
New Haven will spend its next two games away from home with the first on the docket a visit to Garden City, N.Y. for a date with the Adelphi Panthers on Saturday afternoon. The NE10 battle is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start with all of the action available live on NE10 NOW.
