Women’s Tennis Drops 5-2 Decision at Stonehill

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – The New Haven women's tennis team dropped at 5-2 decision this afternoon at Stonehill, with a pair of players picking up wins in solo play. Overall the Chargers fall to 5-6 on the year, 4-5 in Northeast-10 conference play heading into the final match of regular season Friday.

New Haven opened the match with a win at No. 3 doubles from the pairing of senior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and junior Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown). The duo earned their first win of the year together, with a 6-4 victory over Stonehill's Lily Peter and Marissa Such. The Skyhawks would take the No. 1 contest 6-4 with graduate Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) making her return from injury with partner and classmate Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) falling for the first time all-season. The No. 2 bout would be the last to finish, going to a tiebreak, that saw Stonehill edge the Chargers 7-2 for the win and the double point.

Moving to singles play, the Blue and Gold picked up their first win at No. 6 singles, with junior Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) taking a straight set victory 6-2, 6-1 over Such. The other win came at No. 6 singles from Orlando in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, the third straight match that Orlando has won both her singles and doubles contests.
