Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Penalty Shootout at No. 8 Stonehill

EASTON, Mass. – After 80 minutes of play the New Haven field hockey team took to a shootout for the first time this season, dropping a 4-3 decision in the shootout for a 2-1 final in favor of No. 8 Stonehill on Wednesday night at WB Mason Field.

New Haven would put the first tally on the board in the 22nd minute when freshman Abby Nixon (Wrentham, Mass./King Phillip Regional) drilled her fifth goal of the season, tying her for the team-lead with senior Alexis Rider (Delran, N.J./Delran). Nixon's score came unassisted as she knocked in a rebound off a previous shot, scoring to the far post. The Skyhawks would net the game-winner in the 49th minute as both teams went scoreless for the final 11 minutes of regulation and through a pair of 10-minute overtime frames.

In the shootout, the Chargers took an early lead, converting their first three attempts, while the Skyhawks missed on their second attempt. The final two strokes taken by the Blue and Gold were off the mark, the first of which from Julia Battino (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) not converted within the allotted time. The final shot from Rider went off the side of the cage, while Emma Mawn secured the victory when she broke the 3-3 draw on the fifth attempt for the Skyhawks.

Overall for the game, Stonehill outshot the Chargers 26-7 for the game with graduate keeper Keira Integlia (Branford, Conn./Branford) recording 11 saves, her second-straight game with double digit stops. The Skyhawks also led the way with 17 penalty corners, compared to just four for New Haven.

New Haven will return home for the first time since October 12 on Saturday afternoon when they face a third-straight ranked opponent with No. 10 Bentley visiting DellaCamera Stadium. Prior to the game, the Chargers will host their Senior Day activities, honoring eight individuals who will graduate in May. The NE10 match-up is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start with all the action available on the Charger Sports Network on NE10 NOW.
