THE LEAD
The New Haven women's tennis team will begin its quest for the 2021 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship by taking on the No. 3 seed Franklin Pierce in the quarterfinal round Wednesday. First serve from the FPU Tennis Courts is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
SCOUTING THE NO. 6 SEED CHARGERS (6-6, 5-5 NE10)
New Haven ended the regular season on a high note last Friday with a 6-1 win over Saint Michael's, to secure the No. 6 seed in the conference playoffs. Graduate Gaayatri Shankar (Kochi, India/TocH Public School) and freshman Karim Carreras (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio Bautista de Villa Morra) lead the Blue and Gold into singles play tied for the team high in wins with six each, ahead of a trio of players with five victories heading into play Tuesday. In doubles play Shakar and graduate Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) has amassed a team-high seven wins as a pair this season, with Shankar leading the individual totals in doubles play with nine victories overall, the other two coming alongside senior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs). As a team the Chargers are 40-29 overall in singles play, and 21-15 in doubles contests.
SCOUTING THE NO. 3 SEED RAVENS (8-2, 8-2Â NE10)
Franklin Pierce enters the postseason as the No. 3 seed in the six-team bracket and winners of six of their last seven matches, the only loss coming to the No. 1 seed, Le Moyne. Estela Carra comes into Tuesday with a perfect 10-0 record in singles play, in a three-way tie with Liria Loria and Himani Mor for the team-best, with the three accounting for 60% of the teams wins in solo play. In the doubles rounds, Mor and Anais Geslin lead the team with seven wins in ten matches this season, followed by Carra and Loria with six. As a team the Ravens are 50-19 in singles play and 28-8 in doubles matches.
THE 2021 NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS
The 2021 Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Championships kickoff with quarterfinal action next Wednesday, Oct. 20 with No. 3 Franklin Pierce and No. 4 Adelphi as the hosts of No. 6 New Haven and No. 4 seed Adelphi, respectively. The two highest remaining seeds will travel to either No. 1 Le Moyne or No. 2 Southern New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 22, before a champion is crowned Sunday, Oct. 24 at the home courts of the highest remaining seed.
ANDRIC MAKES HISTORY AT ITA's
One of the top players for the Chargers, Andric was one of five players to compete at the ITA regionals in Queens, N.Y earlier this season, becoming the first player in program history to make it to the semi-final round of the annual tournament.
ANDRIC NAMED PROGRAMS FIRST ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA
Following the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, Andric was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team accolades in the at-large division. Andric, majoring in engineering and operations management, is the first women's tennis player to earn Academic All-America distinction in program history, while she is 20th player to earn the national academic accolade among all Charger teams.
