WEST HAVEN, CONN. -Â The University of New Haven men's soccer team concluded their home schedule with their second straight win, a 3-2 Senior Night victory over the Le Moyne Dolphins on Saturday at Kathy Zolad Stadium.
With playoff seeding on the line, the Chargers were on the board first after an
Imanol Ruiz (Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain/Sagrado Corazon Carmelitas) goal, stemming from an assist from
Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova).Â
After a lot of back and forth, New Haven added to their lead when senior
Francisco Guedes (Lisbon, Portugal/Maristas de Carcavelos) scored on an assist from graduate student and fellow defender,
Frantz Innocent Jr. (East Hartford, Conn./Connecticut IB Academy) in the 61st minute. The Chargers would end up putting the nail in the coffin when freshman forward
Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova) scored his 14th goal of the season off a assist from freshman goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet).
After a foul on Kastoris, Le Moyne found the net on a penalty kick in the 81st minute. The Dolphins shrunk the deficit again with a goal with less than three minutes left in regulation, but the Chargers defense was able to hold strong and secure the victory.
Santanach's goal ties him with Adelphi's Rodrigo Descalzo Rocca for first in the conference in goals scored. This is also Santanach's fifth straight game with a goal as he's scored six goals in that time.
Both Ruiz and Guedes scored their second goal of the season. Innocent picked up his first assist of the season, while Santanach recorded his second. Graduate student and midfielder
Tano Desseno (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Saint Patrick College) is still tied for second in the conference in assists with seven.
The Charger's offense now ranks fourth in the NE10 with 32Â goals on the season as the team is currently ranked seventh in the standings with 14 points during conference play.
New Haven outshot Le Moyne, 10-7 (7-5 on goal), with 6 shots in the first half. Santanach once again lead the team with three shots, two of which were on goal.
In addition to his assist, Kastoris tallied three saves in between the posts. Kastoris's season total is now up to 55, which places him sixth in the conference.
Looking towards the postseason, a win for New Haven and a loss for Le Moyne would grant the Chargers the sixth seed whereas a Le Moyne win would put New Haven at seventh.
New Haven, now 7-5-2 on the season, will travel to Massachusetts for their final regular season game of the season to take on the Bentley Falcons. Opening kick is scheduled for 12:00 PM at Bentley Soccer Field on Wednesday, November 3.
