WEST HAVEN, CONN. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team concluded their 2021 regular season with their third-straight win, a 4-0 shutout victory over Bentley Falcons on Wednesday at Bentley Soccer Field.
The Chargers were on the board early when
Alexander Gunnarsson (Kopavogur, Iceland/Verzlenarskoli Islands) scored his second goal of the year off an assist from
Pau Santanach (Barcelona, Spain/Collegi CreaNova), just before the 10th minute.
Amar Sumra (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlow) added to the lead after 19 minutes of play with his first career goal with Santanach once again assisting for a season-high two assists.
After a lot of back and forth, New Haven capitalized again after an unassisted
JP Viruet (Seymour, Conn./Seymour)Â goal at the 40 minute mark. A little over a minute later, Santanach put the nail in the coffin with his 16th goal on the year, stemming from an assist from
Pierre Minga (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame (Fairfield)).
After being named NE10 Player and Rookie of the Week, Santanach delivered another big performance, his third-straight game with 4+ points and fifth of the year.
Santanach's goal adds to his conference lead in goals scored. This is also Santanach's sixth straight game with a goal as he's scored seven goals in that time.
The Charger's offense now ranks third in the NE10 with 36Â goals on the season as the team is currently ranked seventh in the standings with 17 points during conference play.
New Haven outshot Bentley, 16-13 (9-4 on goal), with less than half of their shots in the first half. Santanach once again lead the team with six shots, three of which were on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper
Themis Kastoris (Gothenburg, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasiet) tallied four saves in between the posts. Kastoris's season total is now up to 59, which ties him for fourth in the conference.
Following a win over Southern Connecticut for the Le Moyne Dolphins, the Chargers head into the postseason ranked seventh.Â
New Haven, finishing the season 8-5-2 on the season, will await today's winner over the AIC-Franklin Pierce match, starting at 4:00 PM. With the first round of the NE10 Championship starting Saturday, New Haven will expectedly play the loser of that game.
