NEW HAVEN, CONN. -Â The New Haven women's basketball team dropped their third game of the season in a 83-64 loss to NE10 and in-state rival Southern Connecticut State on Wednesday night as their conference woes continue.
Camryn DeBose (Wellington, Fla./Wellington Community) led the Chargers with 15 points on 6-13 (46.2%) shooting, including 3-6 (50%) from the perimeter. DeBose did a little bit of everything for New Haven, ending with six rebounds and three assists, in addition to three steals on the defensive end. Junior forward
Aurora Deshaies (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden)Â had a dominate performance in the paint, finishing with a 14 point-13 rebound double-double, her second double-double of the season. Junior guard
Kameryn King (Old Saybrook, Conn./Mercy) saw 17 minutes of playing time and capitalized on it, scoring a career-high 11 points on 4-6 (66.7%) shooting, while making her only attempted three-pointer. King also had a strong showing on the glass, grabbing another career-high five rebounds, four of which on the offense.
Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) was held to a season-low six points with her two made shots coming from beyond the arc. Rounding out the starting five is
Briana Van Cleaf (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy)Â and
Bionca Chambers (Bronx, N.Y./New Milford), who put up nine and seven points, respectively. Junior forward
Alyssa Stevenson (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) saw six minutes of action, scoring her first points of the season while also pulling in three rebounds.
The Owls shot 26-58 (44.8%) from the field while making 15 of 34 attempts from the three. Southern Connecticut State also went 16-21 (76.1%) from the line, while the Chargers went 5-10 (50%). The two remained tied at 16 going into the second quarter but after outscoring the Chargers, 23-10, the Owls took control. The 34 three-pointers attempted by the Owls are the most the Chargers have faced this season, so far. New Haven forced Southern Connecticut State into 12 turnovers, while totaling eight steals and one block. DeBose tallied three steals and King finished with two, while Deshaies was credited with the only block for the Chargers. DeBose is noe tied for tenth in the NE10 with 2 steals per game.
As a whole, the squad shot 26-64 (40.6%) from the field, while going 7-16 (43.8%) from beyond the arc. In a game were their was six lead changes, three-pointers made the difference as the Chargers fell victim to the long ball. 19 of New Haven's points came off turnovers while 15 came on second chance opportunities. The Chargers dominated the post, outscoring the Owls 36-14 from inside the paint.
DeBose is now ranked seventh of all scorers in the conference with 16 points per game while Pergola fell to 14th with 12.9. Deshaies's 11.4 average rebounds puts her in sole possession of fourth in the NE10, while her 59.7 field goal percent ranks first amongst scorers. With two more assists, Pergola is now also tied for eighth with 3.3 assists per game.
FIRST HALF
- DeBose led New Haven with seven points in the first half while tallying three rebounds, two steals and an assist.
- Deshaies went into the half with six points and seven rebounds, in addition to a block and a steal.
- Van Cleaf and King each had four points while Pergola totaled three, stemming from a deep shot.
- The Chargers and Owls both finished 21 rebounds in the first half, with the Chargers pulling down 11 offensive rebounds.
- King ended the half with four rebounds, all on offense.
- Southern Connecticut State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter but went into the second tied 16-16 before taking an eventual 39-26 lead.
- New Haven shot 11-34 (32.4%) from the field while the Owls went 12-29 (41.4%).
- The Chargers were held to 2-9 (22.2%) shooting from the perimeter, going 0-4 in the second quarter.
- Southern Connecticut State shot 7-17 (41.2%) from three in the first half.
- The Owls went eight of 12 from the line as opposed the New Haven's two of five.
- The Chargers scored 12 points off turnovers in the first half while six came on fast breaks.
- 16 of New Haven's points came from inside the paint, in addition to 11 points on second chance opportunities.Â
SECOND HALF
- DeBose and Deshaies each had eight points in second half with the latter grabbing six boards, too.
- King put up seven points in the half, to bring her to a career-high 11 points.
- Van Cleaf and Chambers both ended with five points in the second half.Â
- Pergola finished with three points while Stevenson finished with two, both off of free throws.
- Chambers tallied two rebounds and three assists in the game, all coming in the second half.
- Pergola and King went back-to-back from three to start the third quarter off, both draining the shot off a dish from Chambers.
- DeBose and Van Cleaf also went back-to-back from three but at the start of the fourth quarter.
- The Chargers outrebounded the Owls, 20-17 in the second half, while outrebounding them 41-34 overall.
- New Haven shot 15-30 (50%) in the second half while the owls shot 14-29 (48.3%) from the field.
- The Chargers went five for seven (55.5%) from the arc whereas Southern shot 8-17 (47%) from deep.
- The Owls shot 75 percent from the line, going eight for 12, while New Haven went three for five.
- The Chargers scored seven points off turnovers in the second half while only two came on a fast break.
- 20 of New Haven's points came from the paint in the second half, but only four points came on second chance opportunities.Â
