Majak’s Double-Double and Eight Blocks Improves Chargers Conference Record to 2-2

New Haven Starters: Quashawn Lane (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic Academy), Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech), Majur Majak (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), Davontrey Thomas (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie)

Saint Rose Starters: Tray Alexander, Eric Fleming, Shane O'Dell, Josh McGettigan, Kevin Lynch

An intense afternoon in Albany extents the Charger win column to five with a split 2-2 conference record. Saturday's events featured 12 lead changes and six even scores, but the Chargers return to West Haven with another road win, 65-54.

How it Happened
In the opening minutes of action, the Chargers went on an 8-0 run to bring the score in the first half to 13-3. After a turnover from Shane O'Dell, Thomas dribbled through the lane on a fast break to further New Haven's lead to ten.

Saint Rose answered with a 13-3 run in their favor to lock the score at 16. In those seven minutes, the only points for the Blue and Gold was an outside-the-arc shot from graduate student, Sean Smith Jr. (Yonkers, N.Y./Sacred Heart High School)

Tied again at 21, Saint Rose had their second lead of the game, 23-21, when O'Dell made a second chance jumper. The only other lead for the Golden Knights came earlier in the half, a 3-2 lead with 17:48 to go.

Sean Braithwaite (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches), who made his second start of the season this afternoon, stole the ball away from Tray Alexander. Braithwaite found Thomas down the court, who then handed it off to Lane to finish the job.

The Chargers gave up their ten point lead earlier in the half and headed to the locker room with an ironed out 23-23 score.

After five exchanges in leads immediately following the break, New Haven trailed by six with eight minutes of action remaining. Derrick Rowland (Cohoes, N.Y./Green Tech) hit a layup in the paint, and the possession was handed to the Golden Knights. Rowland did not let them handle the ball for 30 seconds, instead he took the ball from Alexander.

With New Haven earning possession, Lane passed the ball to Majak in the paint who dunked over Kevin Lynch to cut New Haven's deficit to two. After a made free-throw and a jumper from Rowland, the Blue and Gold held a lead of one but did not let Saint Rose catch up. They ended the afternoon on a 13-7 run to finish off 65-54.

Inside the Box Score

  • New Haven shot 50 percent from the floor. They shot over 50 percent last game at Southern Connecticut making this their third occasion doing so.
  • Josh McGettigan had the game-high of 17 points, but Lane held the team high for the Chargers at 15.
  • Five of New Havens players each had three-point baskets: Lane, Rowland, Braithwaite, Smith Jr., and Kendall McMillan (Columbia, Md./Mount Saint Joseph)
  • The Blue and Gold gave up 16 points off turnovers, but their defense restricted Saint Rose's shooting capabilities to 35.2 percent from the field.
