Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Rishmany Nets Winner as Women's Lacrosse Upsets No. 6/9 Adelphi 8-7

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - It was a goal just inside of the final 10 minutes for senior Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) that mattered the most, as No. 19 women's lacrosse pulled off the upset of No. 6/9 Adelphi University Wednesday, 8-7, on the road. The win for the Chargers snapped a three-game losing streak, and was just the second win ever over the Panthers in the 20 year history between the two sides.

Rishmany's game-winner was her second of the game and capped a three point day for her as she also notched the lone assist for New Haven on the day. Junior Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) finished with two goals, bringing her just four points away from 50 for her career, and seven goals from the mid-century mark as well.

Also scoring on the day was sophomore Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire), and freshmen Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) and Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier), who all finished with a single score. Skelly, Acquavita and Levitt all extended their scoring streaks, having now scored at least once in every game this season. The goal for Sparks was also the first of her collegiate career.

On defense, freshman netminder Fabi McLeod (Concord, N.H./Cheshire Academy) stepped up for the Blue and Gold stopping eight shots including what would have been the game tying goal with just seven seconds left to play in regulation.

As the rain started to come down just before the opening draw on Long Island, both sides got off to a slow start, with the first goal coming by way of the Panthers just over seven minutes into the game. From there it was a three goal run from New Haven, with two straight from Skelly, followed by a score by Astram, her third of the season and came with her side a player down.

Two minutes after the Chargers took a 3-1 lead, Adelphi answered back with a goal of their own to break back within one. The Blue and Gold remained resilient and continued a streak of late first half goals this season, scoring two in the final seven minutes, and taking an impressive 5-2 lead into the halftime break.

Acquavita opened the scoring in the second as New Haven struck first from a free position opportunity. The Panthers scored their third five minutes later to cut the lead to three before Sparks answered back just 68 seconds later. Sparks' goal was the second of three free position goals for the Chargers on the afternoon to put her side up 7-3 with 20 minutes to play.

Adelphi would turn on the jets as they looked to mount a comeback, scoring a trio of goals in just 2:21 to cut the New Haven advantage to one. The next eight minutes saw a scoreless back-and-forth contest before Rishmany scored her second of the day with 9:23 to play, giving the Chargers a two-goal cushion.

Adelphi's Gianna Bifulco would score her third straight goal for the Panthers with 6:21 to play in what would end up being the final goal of the game for either side. As the clock ticked down to the final minute, both coaches would use timeouts to gather their sides, with Adelphi calling theirs with seven seconds to play.

Out of that stoppage, the home side would get a shot off that flew wide of the cage as the final horn sounded, with the Chargers rushing out to celebrate their second win ever over a top-10 team in the nation.

Next up, New Haven will look to keep the momentum when they return home from a two-game home stand to host the College of Saint Rose on Saturday. Opening draw from Kathy Zolad Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with live coverage on the Chargers Sports Network on NE10 NOW and live stats available at NewHavenChargers.com
