NORTH HAVEN, Conn. - A dominant outing for sophomore Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) sealed the deal for the New Haven women's tennis team as it took down Assumption College 4-1 on Wednesday. The match, played indoors at the North Haven Health and Racket Club is the second win of the year for the Blue and Gold, and snaps a two-match skid.
For Orlando, she did not allow a single game to be won by her opponent in a 6-0, 6-0 victory, in what was her first appearance in singles play this season.
Jumping back to the start of the day, the Chargers kicked off the match with a pair of wins at first and third double to clinch the lone doubles point on the day. In the top bout, graduate student Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) bounced back into the win column with senior Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina), as they took the match in 12 games, 7-5.Â
In the third doubles line, senior Lilia Rodiguez and Orlando clinched their second victory of the year together with a dominant 6-1 win. For Andric and Gonzalez they continue to lead the Chargers doubles tandems with their third victory together in five matches this season.
Moving to the singles matches, Sophomore Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) earned her second win in singles play on the season with a straight set victory at fourth singles, 7-6, 6-1, taking the first set tiebreak 8-6.
At first singles, Andric won her team-high fifth overall match of the year and second of the day as she won in straight sets 6-0, 7-5. The wins today mean she has earned at least one victory in all but one match in her time with the Chargers.
The lone point for the Greyhounds came at the fifth single flight with Valeria Sanchez earning a 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 decision over senior Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista).
Sophomore Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) was tied 1-1 in set two after taking the first 6-1 at third singles. And lastly at second singles, Gonzalez was battling her opponent in a closely contested match that she forced to a third set as well after taking the second 6-4.
The Chargers will return to the court on Friday with the addition of a rescheduled match against Bentley College. The match, which was originally scheduled for March 21, will now be played indoor on the campus of Simmons College with first serve set for 2:00 p.m. All scores and match information will be available at NewHavenChargers.com at the conclusion of the match.
