Women's Tennis Dominates in 7-0 Sweep at Bentley

BOSTON, Mass. -  A straight set victory at sixth singles for freshman Anna Katz (Miami, Fla./Laurel Springs) helped the New Haven women's tennis team as it clinched a 7-0 victory over Bentley University on Friday. Katz's 6-3, 6-0 win was also the first of her collegiate career.

The Chargers opened the afternoon with a 6-0 win at third singles for first-time partners sophomore Alexa Orlando (Frederick, Md./Middletown) and freshman Abby Murphy (Southington, Conn./Southington) who also earned her first career victory.

Their win was followed by another 6-0 sweep at second singles by junior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) and sophomore Kacie Banks (Marietta, Ga./Marietta) who earned their second win of the year together, and clinched the doubles point for the Blue and Gold.

Graduate Ivana Andric (Griesheim, Germany) and senior Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) were the last to finish their match, a 6-2 victory in the top doubles round. The two continued their dominance on the court, earning their team-leading fourth win as a pair this season.

Moving into the singles bouts, Andric was the first to finish, earning her third consecutive match at first singles 6-1, 6-0. With this win and the one at first doubles, she now leads the team with seven victories in 10 completed matches this season.

Sophomore Katherine MacPhail (Park City, Utah/Judge Memorial Catholic) was the next to finish, earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fifth singles for her first victory of the season. Gonzalez followed, giving up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over her opponent at second singles.

Senior Lilia Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista) earned her third victory in singles play this season with a 6-0, 6-3 win in the four spot, with Katz's match finishing right after her. Junior Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs) rounded out the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles to complete a day that saw the Chargers take all nine matches, without dropping a single set.

Next up, New Haven will return to the court less than 24 hours from now when they return home to host American International College on Saturday. Post-game stats will be available at NewHavenChargers.com at the conclusion of the match.
