Acquavita Ties Career-High in 16-6 Win for Women's Lacrosse Wednesday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore attack Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) matched her career-high for the third time this month, scoring six goals as the No. 19 New Haven women's lacrosse team took down American International 16-6 Wednesday at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

Acquavita's six scores came in nearly every way possible, as she scored at even strength, up a player, on the penalty kill, and from free-position

THE LEADERS
The Charger sophomore led a group of seven goal-scorers for the Blue and Gold, with junior Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) scoring four times while also assisting on a goal, followed by senior Emily Holland (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) who drilled a pair on the day. Four other players each scored a single goal including freshman Kyra Sparks (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) who also tallied an assist.

On defense, graduate Raven Linton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Notre Dame) collected six draw controls, followed by reigning NE10 Rookie of the Week Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) with four and Skelly with three. Acquativa finished with a single control as well. Between the pipes, freshman Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had her best outing of the 2021 campaign, stopping 11 of the Yellow Jackets 17 shots, for a .647 save percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Haven took almost no time to get on the board, with Levitt opening the scoring just 40 seconds in, followed by a pair of goals from Skelly, both from free position. Sparks would add a free-position score of her own a few minutes later, before the Yellow Jackets scored two goals just 56 seconds apart to cut the deficit in half.

Neither side would score for nearly 15 minutes before AIC's Krista Iwanicki scored her second straight to bring her side to within one. With the rain coming down all afternoon, lightning in the area forced the two sides into a weather delay with four minutes left.

After nearly an hour-long stoppage, the two sides headed back onto the field, with the Chargers adding one more goal from Acquavita before the break, taking a 5-3 lead into halftime.

The Blue and Gold came out firing once again, scoring three in the opening two minutes of the half, with junior Julia Astram (Milford, Conn./Milford) starting that streak just 42 seconds in. AIC would rebuttal with a pair of their own as they cut the lead to three, the closest they would come for the rest of the day.

New Haven would go on a run that saw the visitors score six times in a span of just over nine minutes, starting and ending with goals from Holland, and senior Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) adding one as well. The Yellow Jackets would tack on one more goal, before New Haven closed the game with a pair of scores in the final five minutes, to sweep the season series with AIC.
