Late Surge Pushes No. 20 Lacrosse Past Southern Connecticut 13-10 in Regular Season Finale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In a back-and-forth battle with its cross-town rivals, the No. 20 New Haven women's lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the contest as it took down Southern Connecticut State 13-10. With the win, the Blue and Gold will end the regular season 6-6 (6-5 NE10) and await the announcement of the conference playoff bracket Wednesday night.

THE LEADERS
Senior Emily Holland (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led the Charger attack, finishing with five goals and an assist, matching her season-high in total points. Junior Marina Skelly (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) followed with her second hat trick in as many games, in addition to a single helper to give her four points on the day, and a team high 29 goals this season. Four other players reached the back of the net, including sophomore Annie Acquavita (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) who scored a pair, including the eventual game-winner late in the second half.

On defense, freshman Cypress Levitt (Calais, Vt./Montpelier) led the team with seven draw controls, while seniors Alyssa Bourque (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown) and Lyndsay Miller (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) each collected a team-high two ground balls. In goal, freshman Gabby Buscemi (East Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) stopped nine shots on the day for her third win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern was the first team to break through, with Karlie Rowe scoring the first of her four goals on the day just 30 seconds into the game. Steph Seymour would add one more for the Owls, before Skelly and Acquavita scored back-to-back goals to bring the Chargers back level.

The home side would counter with one more, before the two sides remained scoreless for nearly ten minutes. It wasn't until the 7:24 mark where Southern would score the first of two straight player-up goals to take a 5-2 lead. Levitt would net a goal with 49 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to two going into the break.

New Haven would come firing out of the intermission, scoring three straight off a pair from Holland and a free-position score from senior Mary Rishmany (Tiverton, R.I./Bishop Stang) to give the visitors their first lead of the contest. The Owls would counter by scoring three of the next four goals in a span of five minutes to take back an 8-7 lead with just under 20 minutes to play.

Holland would give the Chargers the lead less than two minutes later, with a pair of free-position goals 26 seconds apart. The two sides would go back-and-forth, trading the next four goals, before Acquavita's second of the game put the Blue and Gold up 11-10 with 8:03 left in regulation. Holland would add her fourth free-position goal, followed by freshman Kyra Sparks' (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) first of the game to seal a 13-10 win over the Owls.
