Adelphi Jumps Out to Early Lead in 7-4 Win Over UNH Baseball

West Haven, CT - Adelphi scored three runs in the first inning and six over the first four innings, courtesy of a couple home runs, in its eventual 7-4 NE10 win over the UNH Chargers at Frank Vieira Field on Monday, April 5, 2021.

The Panthers, who dropped a pair to the Chargers on Saturday afternoon, got on the board early. Jack Ryan singled with one out in the top of the first and scored when Tim Feliz homered to give Adelphi a 2-0 lead just three batters into the game. Adelphi would tack on a third run in the opening frame when Jose Matos singled home Brandon Warrick, who had walked.

The Chargers inched within 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning when Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) (Cromwell, CT/Cromwell) singled home Noah Eisel (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), who had singled and stole second base.

However, Adelphi took control of the game with another three-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning. It was another longball that did in the Chargers. After Anthony Cipri and Nick Johnson reached base with a walk and a single, Nick Johnson deposited a ball over the left field fence and Adelphi took a 6-1 lead.

UNH pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth and threatened to get back in the game but Adelphi's Michael Storms thwarted the rally. Andrew Cain (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, NY/Seaford) walked and was pinch run for by Noah Fortuna (Plainview, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Plainville, NY/St. Anthony's). Hunter Boag (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) (Colts Neck, NY/Colts Neck) would single in Fortuna. Eisel and Jack Reardon (Commack. N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack) would walk to load the bases with one out. However, Storms induced an infield fly of the bat of Budzik and retired Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) on a fly out to right field.

Adelphi would tack on a run courtesy of a Matt Alifano single to plate Johnson in the top of the seventh to make the score 7-2.

UNH did rally in the bottom of the ninth inning pushing across a pair of runs to account for the final score of 7-4. Fortuna would single and eventually score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 7-3. Budzik would later deliver an RBI single to score Hoag, who had also singled. But Storms weathered the uprising getting Huber to ground out to end the game.

Tommy O'Sullivan garnered the win for Adelphi. He allowed only one run on five Charger hits, while striking out three in five innings on the mound. Storms was one out shy from recording an official save but he allowed only three hits and struck out four in relief for the Panthers.

Kevin McNiff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) (Garden City, NY/Garden City) took the loss for the Chargers. He allowed six runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. Cam Guarino (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) (Falmouth, ME/Falmouth), Drew Silverman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, NY/Commack), Andrew Lisojo (Rockaway, NY/Morris Hills) and Kyle Allen (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) all pitched well in relief, allowing one run and scattering three hits over the final 5.2 innings in relief.

Budzik, Boag, and Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) all had two hits, while Budzik had two RBIs to lead the Chargers.

Adelphi improves to 5-7 (3-2 in the NE10). UNH falls to 2-3 (1-2).
